Introduction

“When I had two hour-long interview blocks booked, I was no longer realizing fifteen minutes into the block that I was talking to completely unqualified engineers.”

If you’ve ever spent hours in a crowded waiting room, you can appreciate the problem Arcules is solving. Arcules is a cloud-based surveillance, access control, and video analytics company that uses heat map analytics and people counters to help optimize space usage in patient waiting rooms. They also provide surveillance analytics services in a host of other industries like property management, data centers, educational facilities, and retail outlets.

Complex technical solutions like these require the expertise of skilled engineers across a variety of domains. When Technical Recruiter Chelsea Sanders joined Arcules in mid-2021, she knew she had a big task at hand. “With only 100 employees in the US, every employee–good or bad–makes an impact on the company,” said Chelsea when she sat down to discuss how Arcules uses Triplebyte Screen to find and hire the right engineers for their team.

The Problem: A resource-intensive interview process that required too much manpower

To say the interview process at Arcules is rigorous is putting it lightly. Between the initial phone screen, to hour-long technical assessments and ninety minute “deep dive” panels, Senior Software Engineer Andrew Tung estimates he was spending eight to nine hours a week interviewing candidates for open roles. He was one of only three people in the entire company who could do what the Arcules team called “deep dive” interviews, which created a bottleneck in the hiring process. To meet aggressive hiring goals, Andrew and Chelsea realized they needed to come up with a solution to scale their interviewing bandwidth.

“With lots of feature releases and engineering conventions coming up, we couldn’t dump three engineers worth of work and interviews on a single engineer,” Chelsea said. “We had to limit the time we were spending on meetings and interviews.” At the top of the list of process improvement goals, the Arcules team wanted to replace their on-site coding assessment. Tung said the scores had been “all over the place” for candidates, making it difficult to compare and prioritize them.

The Solution: An unbiased tool to evaluate candidates faster and reduce interview load

Arcules underwent a rigorous evaluation process to improve their technical assessments. They weighed the pros and cons of nine different tools, including Coderbyte and HackerRank before choosing Triplebyte Screen.

“We found that when considering other assessments, many were geared toward larger companies and had crazy long assessment times - which would cause candidates to drop off,” said Chelsea. “Triplebyte assessments were not only much shorter (45 minutes versus 2 to 3 hours), but also customizable. It’s an objective way to compare candidates, and anyone can administer them, freeing up important time for engineers to perform work.”

Within a month after switching to Triplebyte Screen, the team started noticing results in candidate quality and overall flexibility. “The engineering candidates that were getting booked on my calendar were getting better,” said Andrew. “When I had two hour-long interview blocks booked, I was no longer realizing fifteen minutes into the block that I was talking to completely unqualified engineers.”

With an almost 50% increase in applicants to the company over the last quarter, both Chelsea and Andrew are confident that Triplebyte Screen will continue to be a trusted partner in enabling them to hit their strategic hiring goals as they continue to innovate within the security space.
