As the industry-leading technical assessment tool for vetting engineering skills, Screen is the centerpiece of Triplebyte’s hiring platform. Candidates come to Triplebyte to validate their skills and match with the most relevant jobs for their skill level. Our skills-first approach enables hiring managers to prioritize technical ability over resume prestige, revealing hidden gem candidates they would not find anywhere else. To build and maintain Triplebyte’s extensive library of technical assessments, we rely on subject matter experts who write, review, and peer-review every question.
Matt McCarley joined Triplebyte in November 2021 as the Technical Program Manager for Triplebyte Screen. As Screen’s defacto “Quizmaster,” he’s tasked with recruiting and managing the subject matter experts who craft the thousands of questions that comprise our assessments. Covering a range of topics from General Coding Logic to Machine Learning and emerging languages like Solidity, Matt has hired dozens of contractors since joining the company.
He initially relied on a variety of channels including Triplebyte Hire, Upwork, and LinkedIn to source candidates for the various positions he needed to fill. Navigating all these candidate sources was cumbersome and inefficient. The process was slow and the responsiveness of candidates was generally low. That’s until we built Triplebyte Magnet to automate sourcing, outreach, and prequalification–the most time-consuming pieces of technical recruitment.
As one of Magnet’s early beta users, Matt’s been able to find and hire top technical talent in less than half the time it took before. The efficiency gains Matt has achieved with Magnet have allowed him to make an average of three hires per week, which is 5x the previous rate. Instead of searching, sending messages, and chasing candidates, Matt just creates a targeted campaign for each role and waits for prequalified, warm candidates to come directly to his pipeline. Triplebyte Magnet identifies the most promising candidates and confirms their interest in the role before sending them to his queue, where all he needs to do is invite them to schedule an interview.
“The candidates I’ve gotten with Magnet have been really eager to move forward with the process, which has allowed me to hire so much faster.”

Efficiency gains with Magnet
- 19 hires in 6 weeks
- 4x higher interview pass rate
- Zero time spent on irrelevant candidates
In Matt’s 10 months managing Triplebyte Screen’s assessment library and the SMEs who develop its questions, he’s made 39 hires. 19 of those hires came from Magnet alone and in just six weeks. An iOS Subject Matter Expert role had been open since January. With Magnet, Matt was finally able to fill the role with not one but two contractors–to ensure peer-reviewed assessment quality. Not only is Matt able to hire faster, but he’s also able to hire the very best candidates for each role–no matter how in demand or rare their skills or where they are in the world. A major unlock with Magnet has been accessing high-quality international candidates with skills that are often harder and more expensive to find domestically.
“With many of the hires we’ve made with Magnet, we’re their only contract. They're working full time for another company in senior-level engineering roles and interested in side contract work, which is the ideal candidate for a subject matter expert because we want folks that are currently working in the industry.”

No longer bogged down with a slew of irrelevant inbound applications, multiple sourcing channels, or unmotivated candidates, Matt is able to staff up with considerable agility. This has allowed him to scale his team’s output by 5x and tackle their highest priority tasks faster and more efficiently. Ultimately these efforts result in more comprehensive technical assessments, which empower employers to confidently identify the right talent for their roles.
