Engineering team and processes

Engineering and product are highly coupled at Agora. Our team is dynamic, working across the stack to meet various product goals. As an example, it’s not uncommon for a backend engineer to participate in a user interview. With that said, we have tons of interesting challenges to solve and the responsibilities of the team over the next few years will change drastically.

Our current customer approach is high-touch and we work closely with our customers to ensure we’re delivering software that solves core supply chain problems. We work on a two week sprint cycle for feature development and our deliverables are based on a team driven product roadmap that reflects sales-level objectives.

Technical Challenges

Construction makes up $1.3 trillion of our nation’s economy. Globally, approximately $10 trillion - equivalent to 13% of global GDP - is spent on construction-related goods and services every year, and the sector employs 7% of the world’s working population. However, large projects across the construction sector typically take 20% longer to finish than scheduled and are up to 80% over budget. In fact, since 1947, productivity in US manufacturing, retail, and agriculture has grown by as much as 1,500%, whilst productivity in construction has barely increased at all.

Some of the big technical challenges we deal with are realtime collaborative workflow tools and building a recommendation engine and a dynamic pricing solution.

Projects you might work on
  • Marketplace tooling to allow for collaborative bidding on jobs across many suppliers. This is an example of a “workflow” project which cuts across a number of services and end-users.

  • Building our field app that lets Foremen and Project Managers track and create material orders 30x faster than they do now. This is a combination “workflow” and “systems” project, which becomes even more interesting when dealing with connectivity challenges on jobsites.

  • Mapping of generic products to specific product recommendations. Taking our parts database and existing customer data to create sensible generics that can match to real-world items based on availability and cost. This is an example of a “systems” project which cuts across service design, data architecture and business strategy.

This drives everything our team does, from debating the highest priority features to develop, to operating with full transparency in team meeting to ensure we all have full context, to thinking through how concepts from how iphones are manufactured might apply to make our customers happy.
