Engineering at AI Insurance

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team operates on one-week sprints that culminate in a long weekly meeting on Thursday where we review the previous sprint and build the next one. Engineers typically demo their work during that big team meeting. Our product development starts with research and design, and all engineering work is well defined and based on extensive Figma prototypes. Engineers typically work on and own a feature individually (with the support of design where they need it). We use Github and Zenhub for code review and product management, and we make it a goal to have all engineers push code to production every day.

Technical Challenges

We're handling the data for over 100 insurance companies and standardizing that data, which opens up some exciting opportunities on the ML side of things. Additionally, since we're a platform for running the insurance company, we have to handle the processing of hundreds of millions of dollars in insurance premium.

Projects you might work on
  • Building an entire rating engine, to allow companies to underwrite new policies.

  • Automating the billing process to process hundreds of millions in insurance premium digitally, eliminating thousands of checks back and forth and letting companies send invoices directly to their customers

  • Automating the entire insurance application process so that folks purchasing insurance can have a high-quality experience with their own portal.

Working at AI Insurance

We really care about quality of life. We want AI Insurance to be the most fulfilling work everyone does, but also the best job everyone's ever hard. We have a chill week dedicated to relaxation. We have a company shutdown on 4th of July and from Christmas until New Years. We have mandatory vacation. We pay for everyone's mexican food and watch a movie in Spanish on Cinco de Mayo. And more! We also love what we do and work hard. Tuesday nights we all stay late and work on hardening tickets for example. We love when people take ownership of things and provide leadership through example on how the company could do better. Think we can handle our auth better? Go make the change and everyone will think you're a legend.

Diversity is critical to us, because diverse teams win. Our hiring process follows the Rooney Rule, and we're proud that even at a small team size we're deeply varied. Even our investors are selected based on their intentionality towards diversity and inclusion. One thing we're pushing for is better gender diversity while our team is small.

Every week to kick off our big team meeting we do a burning question and Fyre Fest of the Week where we invite folks to go deep and share their experience, and then also let everyone complain about something trivial. It's one of the many ways we like to share and get everyone involved, even if people are remote.
