  • Founders - Before Air, Shane Hedge (CEO) founded a startup called Swap while at Stanford, worked in media & technology investing at HPS Partners, and was Chief Digital Strategist for Revolt TV in L.A. Tyler Strand (CTO), also launched a startup at Stanford,, which he sold to SFX Entertainment. Most recently he worked as founding partner and director of product at Postlight.

  • Stack - Air prefers to adopt the latest technologies across our stack whenever possible. Our mobile app is built in React Native, with specific modules written in Swift or Java for performance. Our web app shares much of the mobile app's networking code. Our API runs entirely on AWS Lambda using the Serverless framework, allowing us to scale on demand in response to traffic without managing infrastructure. We transcode all our videos in house with ffmpeg on Elastic Beanstalk, and we serve video with HLS to our client applications.

Engineering at Air

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team is interdisciplinary and collaborative. Each team member owns a specific piece of our technology, but they constantly work together to solve problems and define integration points across the platform. Everyone works closely with our designers on implementing new features, and our product managers to understand timelines and scope

We typically follow a kanban process and believe generally in a lowercase agile approach to software development. We have weekly development team meetings to align priorities and communicate daily in person and over Slack to stay on track. We use Notion to track progress and Github to manage code.

Technical Challenges

Our most interesting technical challenges come from pushing the boundaries of the latest technologies without adding unnecessary delays or complexity to our development. We are building one of the first performant media-oriented applications on the web, which often means operating on the bleeding edge of open source projects and contributing back when we can.

  • Build a cloud video transcoder that takes user generated mov files and produces a web-optimized output ready for streaming on any device.

  • Re-design our search implementation to make finding a single photo in a library of 1M+ easy.

  • Implement in-browser video editing, so that users can trim and split their videos to avoid downloading an entire high-res file when they only need a small chunk
