Role Description

Alto delivers its investment experience entirely through applications running on public cloud services providers. Individuals in this role use their expertise with these providers and the systems they offer to deliver on the infrastructural needs of the applications our Engineering teams build to suit our business goals. The role Design, build, and maintain the essential infrastructure supporting Alto’s consumer-facing applications Actively participate and contribute to code reviews and technical design documents, with an eye toward identifying performance and reliability bottlenecks Proactively work with Engineering counterparts to identify and mitigate production issues Validate, document and exercise failover/disaster recovery plans and graceful degradation mechanisms policies and best practices. Capacity planning and analysis, infrastructure change management (including tuning, reshaping, resizing, and migrating infrastructure), for Alto’s platform services. You will have a comprehensive view of the Alto ecosystem, providing valuable feedback and insight to broader capacity planning and event preparation efforts. Collaborate with SW Engineering service owners to ready applications for production deployment, using any findings to better improve the collective system. You will provide operational expertise, sharing best practices on topic areas like CI/CD, observability integrity improvements, novel alerting techniques, SLOs and error budgets for ongoing use. Actively participate in team planning meetings, standups, and on-call responsibilities. You place extremely high value on your relationships with your customers, and have excellent people and organizational skills. You are excellent at managing your time and are comfortable making decisions in your scope of ownership that are necessary to achieve the deliverables you have committed to, or escalating to your manager when needed. Technical skills Minimum 3+ years of experience managing, diagnosing, and debugging large-scale distributed systems in production, including: dynamic web servers, relational and non-relational databases, caching services, pubsub/event-driven applications, containers, and mechanisms associated with resilience, graceful degradation, disaster recovery, and backpressure. Demonstrable knowledge of TCP/IP, HTTP, web application security, and experience supporting multi-tier web application architecturesStrong knowledge and ability to communicate confidently about tools, methodologies, and analysis techniques in the area of: AWS, Infrastructure & Config management, version control (Git), Terraform, CI/CD automation; Systems & Application Monitoring, Root Cause Analysis, capacity planning (redline testing, load testing) in a distributed systems environment. Experience developing infrastructure, configuration, and deployment scripting and automation for large scale / high complexity services in a microservice environment Practical, proven knowledge of at least one high-level language (Go, Python, Ruby, etc.) Experience using containerization software such as kubernetes or docker. Expert level understanding of Linux servers hosted on AWS. B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
