The Amex in a Box engineering team is building technology to rapidly deploy the software that supports our business. Our goal is to be able to stand up a new instance of “Amex as a service” in hours, not quarters, so that the company can move quickly to seize market opportunities and implement strategic priorities.
We’re hiring a senior staff engineer to guide our technical approach and execution. In this role you will share responsibility with the rest of our leadership for building a high-performing team, delivering on our product roadmap, and ensuring the right levels of availability, performance, security, and usability.
Some of the problems we'll work on include:
How to set up the infrastructure and install the software for hundreds of applications at once
How to operate and evolve a set of global services with compute and data partitioned across geographically distributed data centers
How to modularize our architecture so that we can flexibly plug in market-specific capabilities like payment processing and credit reporting on a global scale
As the Tech Lead for our group, you will:
Guide the technical approach and execution of the group’s product engineering teams
Scope and lead large technical projects with enormous business impact for Amex, helping our teams plan and execute their work
Scrutinize and reason clearly about the technology and architecture choices we make in building our products, in many cases making key decisions yourself
Directly contribute to the design and coding of our products, serving as a role model for how great software is built at Amex
Implement software development tools and practices that enable our teams to ship code quickly, securely, and reliably
Build cross-team alignment on complex issues
Mentor our team members and delegate projects that develop their skills
As an individual contributor, you won’t have any direct reports, but you will contribute to the growth and development of every engineer in our organization. You will report to the Vice President of Engineering for Amex in a Box.
In this position, you may choose to work either fully virtually or in a hybrid configuration, coming into a technology campus regularly but infrequently (approximately 2 days out of every 2 weeks). Our team will be distributed across the US and UK, and we expect every member to maintain 4 hours overlap with the US Eastern Time zone during a normal working day.
Qualifications - External You have a strong technical background, including several years of experience with system architecture and API design
You have been a Staff, Principal, or Distinguished Engineer
You have served as the technical lead for a group of engineering teams and can demonstrate broad technical leadership experience
You have owned the technical roadmap for complex product or business areas
You deeply understand cloud-native infrastructure software patterns and tools like Docker and Kubernetes. It is a plus if you have designed system architectures in a public cloud environment
You work well cross-functionally, and your colleagues at all levels and across all teams trust you
You are comfortable in an environment of uncertainty, ambiguity, and change. Experience in the hectic, all-hands-on-deck environment of an early-stage software startup will earn you bonus points!

Code lives in GitHub Enterprise and flows to production through a CI/CD pipeline built on GitHub Actions
Code runs in Kubernetes-managed Docker containers hosted in a mix of private and public clouds
Other key tech includes GraphQL, gRPC, Kafka, Postgres, Couchbase, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Redis, OpenTracing, Jaeger, Prometheus, and Grafana
Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the U.S. is required as the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.

If you have completed your primary vaccine series but have not yet reached your booster eligibility date, you will be able to come into the office; however, you will need to complete your booster within 30 days of becoming eligible to continue coming in and participating in company-sponsored in-person events.
