Why join us?

  • We're a vertically integrated company with a very high quality product. We have been a category leader (online wall decor) for about 15 years. We have been profitable for that same amount of time as well. Although we're already the leader in the space, we think there is a lot of room to grow in this $50B market in US alone.

We have US and European facilities that print, manufacture, and customize the majority of products we offer on the site. A key performance indicator, our customer repeat rate, has significantly increased in the past 3 quarters- that's attributed to the quality of the product, online experience, and marketing.

  • We're grooming a new culture at Art.com that rewards data-driven risk taking, accountability, ownership, and customer-focus. Our leadership team and engineering team previously worked at Lyft, Trulia, Google, Uber, Pandora, Macys.com, Gap, and others.

Engineering at Art

Engineering team and processes

While we have a broad strategic vision for the next 2-3 years, our focus is on quarterly planning. Most major projects are shipped in 1 quarter or less. If we build something new, we'd like to ship the MVP after 3-4 sprints (1 sprint = 2 weeks). We always experiment, whether it's to test new hypotheses, or test new infrastructures and frameworks. Teams manage their own deployment to production through our CI/CD pipeline.

We use Slack, Google Docs, Jira, and Confluence to help with communication and organizing the work.

Our team structure is fluid. Currently, we are looking for new members for our teams focusing on Personalization & Curation, Visualization, Data Platform, and Mobile Apps.

Technical Challenges

We have access to more than a billion licensed Art images and 250 frame styles to choose from. An out-of-the-box recommendation engine doesn't cut it, since it doesn't understand art styles, the interplay between multiple art pieces put together as a gallery wall, or how frames can dramatically change the mood and style. We've had humans curate and categorize over 300K Art images to use as a training data set for our Machine Learning systems: auto-attribution, recommendations, room detection, and many more.

Visualization is also a key area of focus. We're a vertically integrated company, which means that the majority of our products are printed and customized in-house (Ohio and the Netherlands). Customizations may include adding frames, printing on different paper types, canvas mounting, wood mounting, matting, and more. We're very proud of the quality of the products. We believe our sites and apps can do a better job showing off our products. We've implemented ideas, such as Augmented Reality (see TechCrunch and NYTimes links below), Lifestyle Images, Zoomed Corners, and looking to do more on this.
