Engineering team and processes

This is a unique opportunity to build a rigorous engineering culture from scratch. We are a strong team with technical challenges, facing decades of legacy process. However, if we succeed, we can upend a multi-trillion dollar market.

Our team is structured into a few squads of 3-6 developers working with a PM to plan and deliver the best possible experiences. Depending on the team, you might also work with data scientists, underwriters, customer care, or our sales team to tease out exactly what they need and deliver the right product into their hands.

We move fast, but reliably. The livelihood of small businesses across the country is at stake. In practice, this means that we have a robust test suite for all the components of our stack as well as integrations, sandbox environments for each developer, and a duo of software engineers specialized in automated testing.

Technical Challenges
  • We are building a experience for insurance brokers that is faster than anything they've ever used, and cleanly hides a mountain of complexity.
  • We are testing new kinds of underwriting models in production.
  • We are architecting a greenfield project that will support multiple insurance products AND can be exposed as an API to third party partners.
  • We need to build a system that can handle billions of dollars in premium.
  • We need to scale novel auditing and underwriting processes to thousands of insureds.
Projects you might work on
  • Writing backend services and helping design systems that guide an intricate set of business rules and allow those rules to map to deterministic outcomes.

  • Our core platform is written mostly in Python with some services in Go. We prefer to use the right tool for the job and make pragmatic judgements about how to scale and decouple systems as we continue to grow. We’re looking for someone who can navigate a cloud environment (AWS) with many moving pieces and systems to help the team identify how they fit into the broader puzzle.

  • Architecting greenfield admin tooling to analyze business, payroll, and building datasets; working with our data team to detect anomalies and fraudulent entries at scale.
