Engineering at Aura
Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team works together to solve the most important problems every week. We plan our work in tandem with Product and Design (and Marketing for the website) on two-week sprint cycles. We use GitHub pull-requests for code reviews, and have daily standup. New features are developed with input from all stakeholders, and undergo an open product and design review before being scheduled for engineering.

Our engineering team is split between SF and NYC, so we also try to travel between offices to share knowledge and projects.

Technical Challenges

When a new user signs up, we rapidly upload their photo library so we can apply our computer vision and machine learning stack across it, automatically organizing their photos. Due to the seasonality of our product, which is often given as a gift, these signups tend to happen in clusters throughout the year. During peak usage, we are ingesting 50-100 photos per second. To accommodate this, we aggressively scale up our AWS usage during these times, but scale it down quickly afterwards to avoid paying for unused capacity. Building this stack has been an interesting challenge, but the most interesting work remains ahead as we scale to support 500-1000 photos per second.

Projects you might work on
  • You would be building integrations with external photo library APIs, including Google Photos, Dropbox, Facebook, or Instagram.

  • You would be optimizing our current Rails stack, pulling components out into separate services and even databases.

  • You would be making improvements to how we load and track photos displayed on our device, writing code across the backend stack and within our custom Android operating system which is deployed via the factory and OTA updates.
