Engineering at Babylist

Engineering team and processes

The engineering team is organized around both features and user journeys. Engineers are encouraged to both go deep and go broad in owning the end-to-end. We work in two week sprints, solo or in pairs in collaboration with product managers and design as needed for the project. All engineering work is code reviewed by peers, with an emphasis on good test coverage and use continuous deployment to push new features to our users multiple times per day.

Technical Challenges

1) Scaling our direct to consumer e-commerce sales, projected to double in 2019.

2) UX challenges related to guiding less technically savvy users through what might be one of their first/only e-commerce purchases

3) Scale a large universal React application to offer users one of the fastest e-commerce and content experiences available online.

4) Using machine learning to build predictive algorithms and product recommendation/discovery experiences that help you understand the plethora of new brands and products you're being introduced to.

5) Building a rich realtime database of all baby related products, where they are available for sale, and for how much.

  • Creating a personalized registry experience in our apps and mobile web experience, integrating content, user actions, user preferences, and product recommendations to make it easy to

  • Scaling our e-commerce logistics systems to support shipping $36 million dollars worth of products in 2019. This includes warehouse task automation, intelligent order routing to multiple fulfillment centers, and providing users with a streamlined returns process.
