Biotechnology is rewriting life as we know it, from the medicines we take, to the crops we grow, the materials we wear, and the household goods that we rely on every day. But moving at the new speed of science requires better technology.
Benchling’s mission is to unlock the power of biotechnology. The world’s most innovative biotech companies use Benchling’s R&D Cloud to power the development of breakthrough products and accelerate time to milestone and market.
Come help us bring modern software to modern science.
Our engineering team is comprised of the Applications Team, the Platform Team, and the Customer Engineering Team. The Applications Team is responsible for the product modules used directly by scientists to work with their data inside Benchling. This includes DNA editing tools, an electronic lab notebook, sample tracking, workflow design, and more.
YOUR IMPACT * Own projects end-to-end, from initial design, to prototype, to large-scale rollout. * Design and implement backend models and API endpoints for complex scientific workflows. * Design and implement rich frontend components and architecture. We build and operate one of the largest, richest React applications out there and power complex scientific analyses. * Work closely with product managers, designers, marketing, and sales to ensure the right context is being shared. * Help rapidly scale our product and team. As a member of the engineering team, you'll be an integral part of how we mature our tooling, best practices, engineering processes, and hiring.
Check out our engineering blog for some examples of past work. Here are some other examples of recent and future projects:
- Tools to simulate DNA assembly - computers can assist scientists by informing scientific decisions with complex calculations. Our bulk assembly tool allows scientists to simulate constructing hundreds of DNA constructs in parallel, visualizing the end result and highlighting potential issues.
- Chemistry tools - we have focused primarily on biology and biotech for the last 5 years, but are just starting new initiatives to expand our tools to support chemists as well. This will involve modeling complex chemical reactions within Benchling, and is a opportunity to see a new product grow from the ground up.
- Robot and machine integration - scientists are increasingly using automated hardware in the lab to perform measurements. By integrating Benchling with machines like liquid handlers, we are working towards a world where a scientist can perform a physical experiment entirely using software.
ABOUT YOU * Have 3-5 years of experience in software engineering. * Build software with a product-first approach. You ship code quickly and care about the real world impact of your code. * Have strong abilities in problem solving and iterating on feedback. * Enjoy ownership and building key pieces of product. * Are interested in learning more about life science (prior knowledge is not required; desire to learn is a must). #LI-DB1 #LI-Remote
Benchling welcomes everyone. We believe diversity enriches our team so we hire people with a wide range of identities, backgrounds, and experiences. Even if you don't meet 100% of the qualifications for this job, we strongly encourage you to apply.

That means we don’t discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We also consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records, consistent with applicable federal, state and local law, including but not limited to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance.
Our leadership principles guide how all Benchlings can lead by example: Admit mistakes and shortcomings Deliver results Disagree and commit Obsess over customers Rely on work ethic Show empathy Recruit and develop the best Sweat the details Think and communicate clearly Unite around the mission For applicants for U.S.-based roles only: All new hires in the United States are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and to provide proof of vaccination prior to their first day of employment. If you are unable to be vaccinated for medical or religious reasons, we will explore potential reasonable accommodations; however, Benchling may not be able to grant such accommodations in all cases if doing so would cause undue hardship.
If you are a Colorado resident: Please contact us by emailing email@example.com to receive compensation and benefits information for this role. Please include the job title in the subject line of the email.
Benchling is building a platform for cutting-edge life science research: gene therapy, cellular immunotherapy, synthetic biology, etc. Our mission is to accelerate research and magnify its impact by bringing modern software to this historically underserved space.
Research today means disparate tools, manual data entry, and lots of Excel and paper. We provide an integrated platform for designing and running experiments, analyzing data, and sharing results. Scientists are able to work faster, while organizations can collect and tap into their vast institutional knowledge for the first time.
Our company values are:
Admit mistakes and shortcomings Leaders openly acknowledge their failures and what they don’t know, even when it’s awkward or embarrassing to do so. They do this to build trust, encourage learning, and foster comfort with vulnerability and feedback.
Deliver results Leaders create an outsized impact with efficient teams. They maximize output, not headcount or budget. They make high-quality decisions quickly instead of engaging in never-ending debate. They’re rigorous about cutting fat and focus time on delivering what’s most important.
Disagree and commit Leaders actively listen and seek to understand all perspectives. They mine for the disagreements people aren’t sharing, even when it’s uncomfortable. Once a decision is made, they trust the process and are all in.
Obsess over customers Leaders deeply understand our customers and what they need. They embrace the complexity of our customers’ work instead of over-simplifying. They over-invest in building meaningful customer relationships. They obsess over what they can do to make customers successful.
Rely on work ethic Leaders know they must will success into reality. Assuming the current trajectory will simply continue is arrogant. They outwork the competition. They embrace the grind and do the unscalable, unglamorous work to build an enduring organization.
Show Empathy Leaders take time to understand others’ point of view. They express their ideas in ways that motivate others to follow them. They express gratitude inside and outside their teams to give credit where it’s deserved.
Recruit and develop the best Great leaders are great at recruiting, and prioritize it. They understand that A players want to work with A players, and have no tolerance for mediocrity. They retain great people by challenging them: letting go of their own egos and coaching their team on how to step up.
Sweat the details Leaders roll up their sleeves and have high standards. No task is below them. They inspect frequently and when the stakes are high, are personally accountable for even the smallest detail.
Think and communicate clearly Leaders are intellectually rigorous in how they approach problems: they back up their claims with evidence and show their logic. They follow up clear thinking with clear communication. They don’t expect people to just “know what they mean”. They over-invest in simple, written communication to hone their thinking and are deliberate in verbal presentation.
Unite around the mission Leaders operate as a singular team aligned to a singular mission. They respect the work and expertise of other functions, and put no one on a pedestal. Inspired by the potential of biotechnology to rewrite the way we live, they prioritize what’s best for the company as a whole to achieve its mission.
