Active Roles

Why join us?

  • Our technology is a breakthrough in diagnostics and has the potential to transform many fields from prenatal screening to oncology care. To do our share during the pandemic, we were able to build one of the only novel COVID-19 diagnostics with a small research team in record time.

  • We've solved a really hard technical problem with our DNA molecular technology. We have filed 5 foundational patents to protect the technology. Our first paper was published in Nature Scientific Reports. Our team has undergrad and doctoral degrees from Princeton, Stanford, MIT, and Rice University.

  • Our employees love their jobs (one of the highest eNPS scores in the industry) and work hard to achieve our mission. You will work in close collaboration with a truly superstar team with an important mission. In an anonymous internal survey, 100% of our employees a) cared about the fate of the company, b) felt that the mission of the company and their contribution to that mission is important, c) found their work to be a positive challenge.

  • We raised a $30M Series A financing in 2019, and we were in Y Combinator (S17), and we are growing our sales by more than 50% every quarter even during the pandemic.

Engineering at BillionToOne

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team works closely with clinical operations, research, and product teams to solve manufacturing, process engineering, and automation problems. We use engineering processes that maximize iteration speed, such as continuous integration, code review via Github PR, easy staging environments, continuous delivery, and platform-as-a-service infrastructure like Heroku.

Technical Challenges
  • Laboratory information management systems & data dashboards: How to make sure that thousands of samples can go through a complex workflow that takes into account all the right decision points.

  • Human factors engineering: Design a manufacturing system that judiciously combines human intervention and robotic automation to maximize throughput.

  • Healthcare data modeling: $471B (a full 2% of the entire US economy) is spent on tasks related to medical insurance paperwork. We need automated systems to efficiently process this paperwork.

  • High throughput DNA sequencing data engineering: We generate large amounts of scientific data that needs to be ETL'd through proprietary bioinformatics machine learning pipelines.

Projects you might work on
  • You would work with different teams to ensure that samples go from accessioning to reporting with the right inputs at the right time from the right stakeholders by integrating various processes into a Laboratory Information Management System via API calls.

  • You would build the website and integration systems (EMR) that patients and their doctors can use to find out about their test results.

  • You would build the internal data structures used to manage and provide visibility for data throughout the entire company.

  • You would use robotics, OCR, image processing, and UX to automate repetitive wet-lab protocols.
