bit.io
bit.io’s mission is to make data scientists and software engineers immediately productive, to remove obstacles to using data, and to make data more accessible. Join us in building a shareable cloud database where users can share their data with anyone in seconds just like a Google doc, query their data without worrying about compute or memory, and combine their data with a growing collection of immediately use-able open data. bit.io is transforming data in the same way GitHub transformed software and open source.
Why join us?
bit.io is an early-stage, well-funded startup that’s remote-first.
In addition to competitive salary, equity, bonus, and benefits (including top-tier insurance, generous new-parent leave, and unlimited PTO), we do two unique things: (1) in order to be inclusive and to counter systemic hiring inequities, salary and equity is transparent and not negotiated — every employee with the same role and level is paid exactly the same; and, (2) we have 4-day x 8-hour work weeks (i.e., no Fridays) — we value work-life balance and think you’re just as productive.
We’re outcome-oriented, scientific, curious, respectful, resilient, and inclusive.
Engineering at bit.io
We aim to move as fast a possible, safely. Our stack is all inside k8s, with local development occuring in a minikube cluster that is automatically kept up to date with tilt. We deploy to prod daily from our main branch; we deploy to staging on commit to main. We've a great set of unit & integration tests. Our CI/CD process is fast but accurate (but of course, could always use improvement).
We focus our engineering team in weekly sprints with daily standups, aligned with business priorities. We're a small team that moves fast, and we know the value of iteration speed (and invest in it; if development is slowed by process or tool overhead we fix that right away).
Our stack is k8s; python, golang, gRPC on the backend; javascript/CSS/HTML on the frontend. That said, if you know any programming language well but don't know go or python that's not a problem - you'll pick up python and golang quickly.
We're building a database. That's just hard all around :)
Specifically, we have the technical challenges of a database plus the technical challenges of building SaaS. Security, data reliability & consistency, uptime, performance - these all are table stakes. Plus, our UX has be great.
Backend: working on our critical data layer. Working on the services that compose our stack. Working on complex problems in data management & security.
Frontend: Our UX has to be amazing and fast. It's a high bar, and we need great FE people to work on it.
