We build Lantern, a censorship circumvention tool used to bypass censorship around the world, including in the most challenging censorship environments such as China and Iran.

Why join us?

  • We are one of the largest anti-censorship tools in the world, building software every day that brings the open internet to people who would otherwise not have it in places like Iran and China.

  • We have an incredible team of people, and engineering-wise we routinely deploy new protocols and techniques that have never been tried before anywhere on the internet.

  • We're NOT funded by well-known investors (Sequoia, Andreesen Horowitz, etc), so are not answering to them or constantly scrambling to secure our next funding round. We have been profitable for 6 years, and our user base is growing rapidly.

  • We work amongst a larger community of internet freedom technologists and activists who are dedicated to using the internet to further human rights goals around the world.

Engineering at Brave New Software Project, Inc

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team operates on two week cycles, with teams separated out either by the specific feature they're working on or by their technical area that cuts across projects. Each cycle begins with a meeting to discuss features and bug fixes, and ends with a demo meeting where each engineer can show off the work they've completed. Engineers typically work with a designer and any other interested parties to plan a feature, then work on the feature individually. We use Pull Requests on GitHub to conduct code reviews. All engineers are also empowered to push code to production.

Technical Challenges

Can the P2P aspect of our network continue to operate internally if X authoritarian regime decides to unplug from the global internet? Can state level censors fingerprint any byte of our network traffic running X protocol such that they can block it? Where can we remove BGP IP filter rules from outbound traffic such that we can spoof TCP src addresses? How can we find dynamically the most uncongested network routes running out of China at any given time? What about into China?

Projects you might work on
  • Integrate a secure messaging app into Lantern on Android and iOS that is more secure by default than Signal while also incorporating true censorship resistance.

  • Integrate censorship-resistant cryptocurrency transactions into Lantern given that countries such as China could block all Bitcoin transactions on the network whenever they want, beyond just blocking exchanges?

  • Deploy a version of TLS on clients and servers globally that is undetectable to state level actors that have visibility into every byte over the wire.

Working at Brave New Software Project, Inc

Almost everyone on our team is a great combination of being chill and kind while also being exceptional at what they do and hard working. We are all dedicated to our mission to bring the open internet to everyone.

Diversity and Inclusion

We strongly value a diverse and intersectional workforce not just as a symbolic gesture but because we believe it makes our team stronger. That is most reflected in our hiring practices.

We are generally just a very friendly and helpful group, and we have one on one checkins every other week with every person on the team, in part to ask them what we could be doing better. We also really have a low tolerance for drama or being unkind.

We are a diverse group with no typical employee — we come from all over the world with people from many different backgrounds. So to some extent the entire company is made up of people from underrepresented backgrounds, and we all love working together and support each other through thick and thin.

Connect with our team during your hiring process

As part of our commitment to an inclusive workplace, we are happy to offer prospective engineers the chance to connect with our engineering employees who come from underrepresented backgrounds. It’s a way to get a better sense of our team and what it might be like to work with us.

If you’re interested in connecting with our team, be sure to bring this up during one of our introductory calls!
