Engineering team and processes

In general we follow an Agile structure. Our engineers work in two-week sprints, bookended by Sprint Planning and Demo. We use Pull Requests on GitHub to conduct code reviews and manage branches/releases. We value (just to name a few things) well tested code, clarity over brevity, and optimizing for change rather than optimizing for perfection.

Technical Challenges

BAFS is unique in our industry in that we provide technological solutions to financial institutions as well as service solutions (e.g. loan underwriting, portfolio review, etc.). Most other companies in the commercial lending sector only provide one or the other. Since we do provide both, we are frequently looking for ways to use technology to automate and streamline the processes performed by our internal servicing experts, while also building a more feature-rich experience for our customers. Some of the challenges we face are figuring out ways to automate and scale processes and workflows, even when many of these processes have not traditionally been handled by integrated technologies. Additionally, we are frequently building new services/features from scratch as well as working to tightly integrating our existing app with services provided by other companies.

Projects you might work on
  • An example past project is our Loan Accounting System. We have written a custom commercial loan accounting system that is used by both internal BAFS users as well as our partner financial institutions. As new needs arise, we are continuing to adapt this system to meet the needs of our customers.

  • In most situations, the commercial lending process relies on different systems/technologies for different parts of the process (e.g. Loan origination, underwriting, credit management, loan accounting, etc.). We are working to create a fully integrate suite of products that allows internal and external users to stay within the same platform, reduce duplicate data entry, and automate common processes.

  • This past year, in response to the Payroll Protection Program (PPP) rolling out through the Small Business Administration (SBA), we built and launched a new app and new tools for lenders and borrowers. These new products allowed lenders/borrowers to apply for PPP loans and aided with the forgiveness process. For this project we were working to meet ever-changing government policy, and we had to rapidly adjust to keep our product compliant and effective.
