Engineering at Cambly

Engineering team and processes

We currently have a Head of Engineering, 2 PMs, and 15 full-time engineers. We're working on scaling the team up quickly. Our whole engineering team thinks deeply about product and often drives their own projects. We have an amazing marketing team that works closely with our students around the world, and engineers often work closely with them to develop new features to improve the experience for our students and tutors. We don't believe in rigid adherence to software methodologies, and we think engineering teams work best when engineers feel ownership over their projects from idea to launch.

Technical Challenges

We built an on-demand marketplace for students tutors. We need to predict the number of students who need a tutor throughout the day and make sure the right number of tutors are online.

As an English learning app, our students are extremely diverse. We built a highly localized product from day 1. Interfaces need to support multiple languages, and payments vary wildly from market to market. Coming up with good abstractions in our software is critical to being able to move quickly.

Projects you might work on

Build a tutor video chat interface that guides them through an English lesson with their student.
Build an iOS app for tutoring kids in Swift.
Integrate with a payment processor in Brazil, so people without credit cards can subscribe to Cambly with cash payments.
Send audio of a tutoring session to the Google Speech API to give students automated feedback on how their English speaking speed is increasing over time.
