Despite COVID's impact on the hospitality industry, Canary has been fortunate to still nearly double in size over the past year. Additionally, we've helped hotels offer contactless solutions to more safely serve guests and protect their own staff.
We work hard, play hard and don't take ourselves too seriously.
Whereas you're not going to be building compilers or new databases at Canary, you will build intuitive software that will effect how millions of people will travel across the world.
Engineering at Canary Technologies
We operate on a weekly cycle. We start the week with a pre-sprint planning on what needs to be done this week.
Because we're growing, our weekly sprints to get interrupted by requests from high profile customers. We're open to this interruption because it is in the long-term benefit of the company.
It's great to have amazing customers and it's very important for us to go the extra mile in the early days to serve them.
There are three sets of challenges in the upcoming years:
Continue building software that helps hotels manage their guests.
Global presence. This doesn't just mean internationalization, it might mean distributed systems with country specific hosting.
Scaling the core. We've grown faster than we could handle and there will be infrastructure and scaling challenges that lie ahead.
Removing dependency on form software and building a custom form builder in house.
Building a chat bot that automatic replies to guest questions for the hotel.
A prediction algorithm that tells hotels who the most important guests are (VIPs) and which guests might be fraudsters.

We believe in grinding in the short-term, with always an eye on the longer term vision.
We build for the traveler community and by definition this is a diverse audience. We strive to have gender and racial balance on the team.
We treat everyone like a family member. We start off as colleagues and become friends. We think work is important, but we believe people's lives are most important so we try to relate to folks fully.

We plan to reopen offices later in 2021, but still offer flexible work from home
We have SF and NY offices that you can visit.
We have annual off-sites during non-pandemic years. It's a great way to have our semi-distributed team bond in person. Also, a perk of the being in the hospitality industry is that we like to stay in nice places :)
We're strong believers in monthly social gatherings and more frequent happy hours. During work-from-home, movie club, book club, and self-improvement club are all going strong. We're itching to add more and already have some support for board game night, sports teams, and more!
