Role Description

ABOUT US We’re a team of developers, designers and product managers who partner with clients to build exceptional digital products. We’re looking for developers that are excited to solve interesting challenges within a collaborative cross-functional team. Our developers work across the stack and often weigh in on product decisions. Projects typically use Ruby, JavaScript, or Elixir (sometimes Java, Go, or Python) on the backend. On the front-end we're building sophisticated web clients with JavaScript (mostly React) and Native (iOS and Android).

You’ll get a tremendous amount of experience because of how we work and learn from one another and our clients. Carbon Five is a great place to level up both technical and collaboration skills, while learning a bunch about different industries and companies.

WHAT YOU BRING *You have experience - Five or more years of full-stack development, including JavaScript and at least one of Ruby, Elixir, or Java.

*You dig agile - We write tests, pair program (much of the time), refactor, build iteratively, and hold close the other agile principles.

*You are product minded - We’re known for doing high quality work. We pay attention to the details and don’t code in a vacuum. We’re always looking through the lens of the people who will use what we build, so that we can make smart decisions.

*You are flexible - Sometimes we don’t always have the answer and need to think on the fly. You should be comfortable with ambiguity, proactively seek needed information, and use your best judgement when coming up with a solution.

*You are curious and want to learn - Tech is a dynamic industry where new languages, frameworks, and techniques are born regularly. We’re perpetually learning about new things to see what makes sense for us and our clients.

*When you learn something, you want to dig deep and really understand it, not just get it working.

*You are empathetic - Not everything goes according to plan - what’s important is we keep our cool and focus on understanding each other’s point of view while working together to find a solution.

*You have strong communication skills - Pair programming and ad hoc team collaboration is a huge part of our day and one of the reasons that our clients enjoy working with us.

*You are enthusiastic - We value people who love what they do at work, and are equally as excited about what they do outside of work.

WHAT WE PROVIDE *An honest, sustainable 40 hour work week - your nights and weekends are yours.

*New domains to learn and problems to solve every few months.

*Tools for you to grow, including a professional development budget.

*Comfortable offices stocked with snacks, catered meals, endless coffee and good conversation.

*Fully paid medical coverage, dental & life insurance.

*Time off including vacation time, family-friendly sick days, holiday break, new parent leave, and an opportunity for sabbatical.

*401k and profit sharing at the end of each year.

About Carbon Five

We’re a team of developers, designers and product managers who partner with clients to build exceptional digital products. Our company is small-ish but growing and we have five offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chattanooga, New York, and Seattle. Over 18 years we’ve worked with some amazing clients like Stitch Fix, Hulu, Brandless, Autodesk, Coinbase, and TaskRabbit.

We're growing and have been self-funded from the start, so we have the luxury of being able to invest in whatever will best serve the long-term value of the company. We know the best investment to make is in our employees.

Company Culture

All of the partners have been here for 11 or more years. People tend to stick around for a long time and those that don’t are the ones that come in and leave pretty quickly because they discover that this isn’t the right environment for them. There is big difference between having a product-type versus a consulting-type of involvement at a company. Some people want to have ownership in a product over many years, and potentially move up in title and in a hierarchy. Whereas for us on the consulting side, we are people who constantly like learning, leveling up our skills, and enjoy doing it quickly. You might go from doing data-warehousing work with Java to building a platform with Node to developing in React Native for a mobile application. People who like diving into different domains and code flourish here.
