Care/of (takecareof.com) launched last year as a well-funded startup in the health and wellness space with the mission of making the experience of taking vitamins dramatically better. We’re not your average supplements brand. Forget the confusing vitamin aisle or the late-night supplements infomercial - we’re creating something different and highly personalized. We make our own line of products, including vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and more, and offer them online via a convenient monthly subscription. Our technology makes it possible for customers to get personalized supplements, tailored to their diet, health goals, and lifestyle, in customized daily packs. Our aim is to help people feel empowered and make the right choices for their health, and to make it brilliantly easy, too. Since launch, we have consistently exceeded our very high growth goals and there are no signs of slowing down. As we continue to explode in growth, we're looking for talented engineers to help scale our product.

Why join us?
  • We are in a very high margins industry and despite only being 15 months old, have a clear near-term path to profitability and a very sustainable business model. Our two Co-Founders have both previously built successful companies (Bonobos, Hometeam) and we have a very experienced leadership team (Gilt, Jet, Airbnb, etc.). The outlook is very bright!

  • Our engineering team has grown to five without sacrificing out perpetual commitment to implementing the required quality for each feature. This requires an extreme level of trust which is a characteristic our team exhibits. We also have frequent hilarious outbursts as dynamic, connected teams tend to have.

  • In order to offer an extreme creative outlet for engineers who appreciate deep relationships with departments such as design, UX, PM, and the co-founders via cross-functional teams, our team allows for the flexibility. We offer a spectrum for developers to exist on from desiring specific use-cases and acceptance criteria for each feature to more general go improve this biz-critical widget kind of request.

    Some folks want to implement solutions, some have advanced to finding those solutions (and implementing them), and eventually, one can excel at finding the problems - we're looking for all types to fill out our team.


Engineering at Care/of
Engineering team and processes

We have an engineering manager who facilitates our five full-stack engineers and reports directly to the Head of Digital Product (also a co-founder).

We operate with ongoing and extreme trust, both within the development organization and when relating to other parts of the business.

We do blameless post-mortem after failures to learn as much as we can from them, believing that negative feedback is a far more reliable cause for new policy than potentially coincidentally positive feedback.

We do weekly priorities check-ins to communicate the blended business-priorities with the engineering-sourced priorities and we constructively decide which engineer(s) will work on what projects according to experience, desire, and timing requirements from the business.

We do team retrospectives every other week to squash any problems before they become substantial.

We do weekly 1:1's with our managers to check-in on our progress towards our desired career position, taking into consideration the desired rate of ascension or cross-ladder shifts.

We pair with each other when we need to reduce the bus-factor or share information for feature work.

We release our software without any unnecessary dev-ops overhead by focusing on maximizing business velocity and improving quality with a back-seat given to operating costs - this pushes us to outsource everything that is outside of our core mission: improving the health of our members.

Technical Challenges

We have scaled from zero to 50k+ users since our launch in November 2016 without any significant downtime or extensive code changes. Of course we're always adding new features but, generally, we don't have to change our merged code.

We have the most personalized vitamin subscription product available. In order to facilitate that, our fulfillment center is automated with Ansible and uses Raspberry Pi's running Node.JS and using electrical relays to interface with the factory equipment.

Projects you might work on
  • Improve the contribution margin for the fulfillment center from 15% to >30% in two-months.

  • Add the ability to the mobile app to add/remove and display the vitamins on one's pack.
