CloudTrucks is a "business in a box” solution for truck drivers at a much lower cost using software engineering, data science and world class operations processes. Our mission is simple — to put more money in the hands of truck drivers and reduce their headaches. Our value to drivers cuts across 4 core pillars — data science (automated revenue maximization models like the optimizer), workflows (we have simplified and automated complex booking, payment and negotiation workflows), financial products (CT Cash in partnership with Visa and Stripe) and Compliance products.

Engineering at CloudTrucks

Engineering team and processes

With a small engineering team, our organizational structure is flat, with engineers divided into product areas. We use agile methodology, with a 2 week sprint cadence to set goals and deliverables. Engineers operate with high autonomy and trust, taking end to end ownership over projects, working closely with designers and cross functionally with other teams as needed.

Engineers are responsible for designing, coding, testing, and maintaining their code in production (we follow DevOps methodology). Our code is peer reviewed prior to merging and we ship to production multiple times a day with zero downtime deploys. We favor pragmatism and speed over perfectionism and our focus is on delivering customer value and driving company growth. We rely on our engineers judgement to find the appropriate tradeoff here on a per project basis. For example, on larger or riskier projects we will invest the time and due diligence to draft technical specs, do technical design reviews and get sign-off from the rest of the team to help de-risk the project.

Having a culture of learning is extremely important to us! In addition to building a mission-driven company, we are also building mastery in our craft. Our engineers come from a wide range of diverse backgrounds and skillsets and we love learning from one another. We have weekly engineering all-hands where the team talks about interesting technical challenges, discussions, and learnings. We also use this as a forum to demo, showcase, and celebrate our work. When necessary, we will run blameless postmortems to deep dive on incidents and ensure we learn from them.

Technical Challenges

CloudTrucks is building a platform that reimagines what is needed to operate a trucking business. Here is a sample of the technical challenges we are solving:

Building out fintech products and ecosystem to service truckers, one of the most common occupations in America.

Building business logic, workflows, and data models capable of handling the complexities and messiness of the real world. At scale, accidents, mechanical breakdowns, fraud, etc. are guaranteed.

Building deep integrations and partnerships across the multi-billion dollar trucking ecosystem.

As we start to scale the business, ensuring our services continue to function well at 10x our current load and beyond. Our platform needs to be highly available 24/7: truckers are out on the road at all hours, financial transactions like credit card charges are routed to us in real time, etc.

Analyzing and leveraging the vast amounts of data available to us to help our customers and our platform, operate more efficiently and with greater insights. This can range from data streaming off trucks on the road in real time, changing market and price data across the country, to data related to financials, safety, and risk.

Projects you might work on
  • Instant payments — Enable instant payments to drivers by issuing a credit card whose limits can be updated in realtime in response to card spend, withdrawals, completion of jobs on the platform, etc.

    As part of this work, build the underlying ledger infrastructure to track money movement in a highly consistent and auditable way.

  • API integrations — Build deep 3rd party integrations with the top brokers and marketplaces in the trucking industry to enable capabilities like searching for and booking jobs. Expose these capabilities in a generalized way to the rest of the CloudTrucks platform.

  • Logistics optimization — Instead of drivers spending lots of their time searching for and manually building their upcoming work schedule, job by job, day by day, build a logistics routing optimizer that factors in compliance, safety, profit, driver preferences, and driver behavior to generate an optimal job schedule for drivers across multiple days and locations, automatically searching through 1000s of jobs.

  • Back office automation — We receive lots of PDFs with similar content in varying formats and layouts from different brokers we work with. Build a document processing engine that is able to take an unstructured PDF and extract structured data. Leverage this capability to fully automate business workflows and remove the need for manual work.
