Clubhouse is a new type of social product based on voice. It allows people everywhere to talk, tell stories, develop ideas, deepen friendships, and meet interesting new people around the world.

Our users love the product and we have been featured in publications like The New York Times, Forbes, The Telegraph, TechCrunch, The Information, CNBC, and WIRED — as well as a huge range of thoughtful blog posts. Today, we are a small and productive team with a strong background in consumer products. We are well funded, with recent backing from top-tier VCs and many of the best angel investors in Silicon Valley.

As we continue to accelerate our growth, we are expanding the team and looking for extraordinary people who are exciting about building and having ownership in the product. If you think you would be a good fit, please let us know! 🙏

Why join us?

  • You’ll be surrounded by an incredible team of builders — full of former founders, PhDs, early employees that scaled consumer products at companies like Facebook, Pinterest, Google and Coinbase, open source contributors, and amazing creative minds

  • A culture of moving quickly and shipping and having fun while doing it. As a team, we move quickly, ship fast and get alot done. We do this not by taking on everything, but by hiring an incredible team, focusing on the things that matter, and ignoring things that don’t. We are efficient, meeting-light, and relentlessly focused on building. We see the code through the product. We prioritize user value over code excellence.

  • Small team, multi-billion valuation. We are in the sweet-spot of still being a small, scrappy startup, but with a long runway and backing from top Tier VC's like A16Z and Andrew Horowitz.

Engineering at Clubhouse

Engineering team and processes

Today our engineering team is ~35 people. We ship mobile client updates weekly Our iOS app is native and uses very vanilla tech stack, build is a monolith in Xcode, UIKit, with few dependencies

Technical Challenges
  • We have a lot less platform infrastructure than our competitors do, to be a successful product engineer at clubhouse you will often have to make more decisions and build more scaffolding than you may be used to at a larger company. For example our client side experimentation, feature flagging, and data layer are all areas that folks have recently made improvements along the way while shipping new features.

  • [iOS] Clubhouse is fundamentally a synchronous product, so providing real time updates is essential to the user experience. Due to our scale that often means accomodating updates from multiple data sources. Our live room view is driven by combined updates from our RPC endpoints, updates to the audio states communicated via WebRTC and Pub/Sub messages from the backend.

  • [iOS ] We ship updates to our mobile clients on a weekly basis to our millions of users. So finding the right balance of keeping code quality high in order to maintain that velocity without adding too much overhead is a challenge.

Projects you might work on
    • [iOS] Dark Mode :)
    • [iOS] New room types and easier ways to assemble your friends to hangout live
    • [iOS] Helping scale our live room size beyond 10k+ concurrent users

Working at Clubhouse

📈 Focus on impact We have not won yet. We focus on things that have the most amount of impact, and avoid distractions like competitors, detractors, or low-effort/low-impact tasks that don't move the needle. We stay heads down building, making Clubhouse better every day

⚡️ Move quickly We focus and ship quickly, rather than spending time to get every detail right. This helps us move fast and earn the right to add polish down the road

✋ Raise your hand When something needs doing, we take the initiative to drive it, setting expectations on timing and following up on our promises. If someone is blocked, we take pride in unblocking them. If a deliverable is going to be late, we let people know. If we drop the ball on something, we own it. This allows us to quickly earn each other’s trust, so that we can operate independently, knowing that our teammates will always deliver.

🙂 Embrace the good We believe the future is created by optimists and are building Clubhouse to be a force for good in the world. As product builders, we work to ensure that Clubhouse makes people feel better each time they use it. As operators, we come from different backgrounds, but we always act as one team—supporting each other, welcoming different perspectives, sharing our knowledge, and helping each other grow. With our teammates, our user community, and the world, we are relentlessly positive—approaching each new challenge with the confidence that together, we will always find a way.
