Coda is a new doc that's as powerful as an app. The founding Coda team crossed paths at Google, YouTube, and Microsoft. Now the team is 50 people-strong (and looking to grow!) with offices in Bellevue, San Francisco, and Mountain View. The company is backed by Reid Hoffman (Greylock), Hemant Taneja (General Catalyst), and other top investors with over $60MM in funding.
We've raised over $60 million by world-class investors such as Greylock, Khosla, General Catalyst, and NEA. You'll even get first-hand exposure to working with our investors as the entire company attends our board meetings.
We recently launched out of private beta, so we're at a stage where you'll have the opportunity to greatly influence the direction and development of the product. Our CEO credits a lot of the best ideas for our product coming from engineers at every level. Our engineers tend to take on a much broader role, often blurring the lines between being engineers, product managers, and designers.
We're building an amazing new product that brings together the best of docs, spreadsheets, and databases. If your thing is great UX - we have that with ReactJS and our mobile work. If you like calculations and programming languages - we have that too in our calc/formula engine. Cloud stuff? Well, we're building a high scale Kubernetes service deployed and running at-scale in AWS!
Mobile Web and
auto-layoutviews: In this project, we challenged ourselves to automatically flow user's content onto a mobile phone. This created a magical experience which considered the optimal layouts given the physical constraints of a mobile or tablet device. This allows documents to have, say, a tabular (wide) view on desktop and to render with an auto-picked compact card view on mobile and tablet. This was done by analyzing the data types, data distribution and device viewport to pick the best fit view. Images in Table
Serverside Rendering: In this project, we were focused on improving our SEO (search engine optimization) and ranking results. Prior to this work, our landing page and template gallery were rendering in React in the client which means poor search results. With this work, we built out and deployed a headless Chrome rendering service using Puppeteer.
Packs Infrastructure: This was one of our largest and most ambitious infrastructure and extensibility projects. Our goal was to provide support for 3rd party developers to extend Coda with new formulas and button/automation actions. With this infrastructure, we designed and deployed a hosted RPC service which allows us to dynamically deploy Packs (a Pack is, say, Google Calendar, Weather Forecast, Github, etc.) which are then referenced in individual customer documents. Building this requires the design and development of multiple microservices (auth, GRPC proxy, calculation proxy) which hosted the 3rd party code. In most cases, these 3rd party modules issued RESTful calls to 3rd party services.
