CodeCombat is building a new way for K-12 students to learn computer science by using real programming languages to play an adventure game. We help students learn how to write functions in order to control their ‘hero’ avatar, implement puzzle-solving strategies, and ultimately code their own websites and games. We continually research and experiment with new ways to combine gaming and education so kids can learn computer science with a smile on their face.

We are a small, tight-knit team passionately educating millions of students worldwide. We are dedicated to providing an enjoyable, meaningful place to work. Team members pursue a healthy work/life balance, with unlimited vacation and flexible working hours.

Engineering at CodeCombat
Engineering team and processes

We all operate as full stack engineers, which allows us to be nimble as a small engineering team. It's also helpful that the whole codebase is in JavaScript. Engineers at CodeCombat split their time between customer-focused projects, maintenance (bugs, small misc tasks), and engineering improvements (e.g. upgrade build system, migrate to Vue.js). Customer-facing projects are where the majority of time is spent.

Engineers typically work with designers and other stakeholders to spec out features, and then push forward their contributions on an individual basis. We use GitHub Pull Requests and a suite of automated tests to push changes to production multiple times a day.

Technical Challenges

1) Extend our single player game to support synchronous multiplayer

2) Add customized items to character animations

3) Migrate entire codebase from CoffeeScript to JavaScript

4) Migrate from Backbone to Vue.js

Projects you might work on
  • Extend in-game character animation to include custom items and colors

  • Integrate our classroom management with Google Classroom

  • Design a progress dashboard that is fast and accurate
