Cognition IP is a law firm dedicated to patent law and an affiliate technology company. We're different from other patent law firms in our use of technology to increase quality and efficiency. We offer transparent, flat-fee pricing.
Our technology company is currently working on tools to help increase the efficiency of the patent prosecution pipeline from client intake to management to attorney review. Our tools also leverage advances in artificial intelligence to enable our attorneys and staff to work faster and smarter.

Both co-founders are technical, having received advanced degrees in Computer Science. One also has a JD from Harvard Law School and understands the patent law space very well.
The legal industry is ready for disruption. With a market size in the hundreds of billions of dollars, the industry still suffers from lack of innovation and slow moving incumbents.

Engineering at CognitionIP
There is no typical day in a start up. Day to day activities include communication with dev team members and legal staff and ample time to explore solutions to difficult problems and to implement those solutions. Opportunities abound for full stack development, devops, machine learning, and more! All tech hires report directly to the CTO. We employ 2-4 week sprints, and appreciate candidates with solid understanding of unit/integration testing and continuous integration/deployment.
Since we are tightly integrated with the law firm, our developers must be able to effectively communicate with attorneys and non developer staff (the nice thing about patent law is that almost everyone is technical to some degree). Requirements drafting and understanding both the legal space and the software engineering space requires some effort. Even more challenging is wrangling the tens of millions of documents representing the patent landscape and applying Machine learning/Artificial Intelligence techniques to help our staff work more quickly and produce better quality work than the incumbent law firms.
Building an end to end portal that allows collaboration from all stakeholders in the patent process from clients to attorneys to investors. Building this system from the ground up with the idea that software tools and codified process improvements can greatly benefit everyone involved. There are also many opportunities for integration with machine learning models.
