Engineering at CoinDesk
We are a rapidly growing company structured across two primary work streams: digital media, and our data systems. Our engineering team operates consistently with agile best practices though we favor pragmatism over dogmatism.
We try to keep our stand ups lightweight and impactful, and reserve time weekly for planning and reviewing sprints. Engineers typically work with product team members and can engage with stakeholders with other departments directly on new features. Engineers focused on our data systems also work closely with our research team that provide business analysis on data requirements before implementation.
We use GitHub (and gitflow) for version control, and employ Jenkins for CI. We enjoy working with broad mind, considerate and talented team members that take pride in their craftsmanship.
Our media site is highly trafficked by millions of users per month. We’re scaling our systems and grapple with interesting challenges regarding availability, and caching. While we use Wordpress for our core CMS, we share our front end assets in a separate repository that allows us to develop react apps that share core stylings. This gives us the reliability of Wordpress for publishing and allows us to create react apps to provide more data driven experiences.
Our data systems present numerous technical challenges. We’ve developed a distributed system that ingests market data in real time from a variety of crypto currency exchanges, as well as ingesting hundreds of fundamental data points from a variety of 3rd party systems. We perform calculations, and digest our information into a variety of data stores.
We grapple with exogenous events and upstream data quality issues that require us not only build the pipes, but introduce application logic to ensure accurate synthesis of data. We plan on progressively enhancing our data system to ingest, analyze, and the deliver an increasingly amount of crypto currency data to provide to users of our digital media site, and to license to enterprise users.
We work with our research team to develop proprietary methodologies and engineer scalable performant systems to deliver them to a large audience.
The industry typically uses market cap to assess the maturity of a given asset. At Coindesk, we've developed a methodology that synthesizes over 600 unique datapoints to reflect the maturity of an asset with regards to signals at exchanges, on chain transactions, as well as social, and developer signals.
We developed the first price index of bitcoin. coindesk.com/price. We're about to release a suite of real time indices for most of the top digital assets.
