Engineering at Colossus, Inc.

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team is extremely lean. We like to operate on roughly 2 week cycles where we are pushing code to production sometimes multiple times per day. We're obsessed with using the best tools to build software. We heavily utilize many open source projects and our infrastructure is equipped with CI/CD pipelines, zero-downtime deploys, point-in-time database restoration, and many other developer-friendly tools to let you focus on one thing: shipping amazing code.

To keep it short and simple - we like to do what works and stop doing what doesn't work. We try things, we experiment, and we iterate. Doing so helps us figure out the best working process for our team.

Technical Challenges

We have a rich catalog of our podcast episode transcripts and the best curated business and investing content that lives elsewhere on the internet.

With our transcripts, we have over 5 million words that are searchable down to the very word - we get to do some cool stuff with natural language processing here. The transcripts are also loaded with great lessons on business, investing, and technology - most of which is unstructured in the form of plain text. We want want to develop a machine learning process that mines the important lessons from the transcript into a structured format allowing us to better serve our customers.

We're also building a catalog of 3rd party, curated business and investing content from other sources on the internet. This consists of other podcasts, articles, books, papers, videos, etc. that are considered to be some of the best content on these topics.

With both types of content mentioned above - our podcasts and other third party content - we're working hard to categorize it into a multi-level category hierarchy. This is quickly becoming a massive data set, and it will ultimately become the best taxonomy of business and investing content that exists.

Projects you might work on
  • You'd get to lead the development of our flagship iOS app from scratch that transforms the podcast listening experience from one that is focused on consumption to one that is instead focused on helping listeners learn. This is a great opportunity to do things your way and steer the direction of mobile development at Colossus.

  • You'd get to help build a machine learning pipeline that mines unstructured data from our episode transcripts into more structured format that helps our customers learn from our content.
