At Convex (YC W19), we’re using software and data to re-imagine the $300bn commercial contracting industry—from HVAC, to plumbing, to electrical work. It's a 100-year-old construction sector impacting billions of people every day. We work with some of the largest enterprise companies in the sector and were one of the fastest growing companies in the latest YCombinator batch. Our team is a unique mix of industry veterans from Carrier and Honeywell as well as technical founders from MIT, Harvard, and Georgia Tech. Based in San Francisco, our investors include Sequoia, 1984 Ventures, UP2398 (Pierre Omidyar), Liquid2 (Joe Montana), YCombinator, the founders of PlanGrid, and others.

Our engineering team currently consists of the CTO doing backend work, and a remote team doing UX/UI design and frontend work, as well as QA. Our Head of Product also covers data engineering and overseas our data science / ML efforts.
We use Slack for communication, Jira for task management, and AWS services for hosting, deployment, etc. We do a video call with the remote team twice a week. The agenda for the call, depending on the day is 1) sync up on outstanding questions, discuss issues in progress, etc. 2) demo new features 3) preview design mocks for the upcoming sprint.
Our team is small, so our processes are light. Developers commit to the development and staging environments regularly. New features are QA’d in our staging environment and dependending on urgency, deployments are made to production a couple times a week.
We pride ourselves on being a lean, high performing, over achieving team. We move very fast without breaking (important) things.
We are creating comprehensive data set on every non-residential building in the country, around 60M properties. This requires us to build several things simultaneously: a data pipeline, a tool to build training sets for machine learning models, and finally, efficient access to this data for our customers.
Our flagship product, Atlas, allows users to view information on every non-residential building in their area. It also facilitates their workflow as they take it through their sales process. We are constantly improving on and expanding the feature set of Atlas to better serve and expand our customer base.
Part of the “secret sauce” is our internal tool, Cartographer. Cartographer allows an off-shore team to “label” buildings which serves as a training set for our machine learning models.
Our next product, only known as “Proposal Generation” right now, will be a complex application that allows our users to more efficiently and consistently generate custom proposals for their customers.
We value customer obsession, thoughtfulness, listening, hard (yet smart) work, and modesty.
