Cortex Building Intelligence
Cortex is a rapidly growing technology startup in the Commercial Real Estate space. We provide software that enables building operators, including the team at the Empire State Building, to run their buildings with significantly more precision. This creates substantial financial savings, while also having a significant environmental sustainability impact. We do this by providing an application layer on top of highly underutilized data sources (Building Management Systems, utility meters, etc.). Our product makes sense of thousands of data points, makes that information available anywhere through our mobile app, and uses Machine Learning to provide proactive recommendations for decisions that building operators have to make on a daily basis.
Why join us?
We're saving our clients a significant amount of money while also having a meaningful impact on environmental sustainability.
We've got an amazingly talented engineering team that knows what it's like to work at a successful, early stage startup.
We believe in well-written testable code, constructive code reviews, iterative development, collaborative white boarding, and choosing the right tool for the job. We believe high quality code leads to high quality software products. 90% of our codebase is covered by automated tests.
Engineering at Cortex Building Intelligence
Our engineering team is a small, tight-knit group of three and we're looking to add on two more outstanding teammates. Operating on such a small team means there are a lot of opportunities for everyone to contribute in a diverse set of technical and non-technical capacities.
Our processes are collaborative, but light-weight. For any given product feature we'll typically create a shared mock-up to collect feedback on the product experience we'd like to provide. Next we break the work down into small units and deliver work products in increments that provide continuous value.
We use Github and all work is code reviewed before merging into our master branch. All engineers have access to our production systems and have the ability to deploy our software as often as is needed.
At Cortex we are tasked with making sense of the millions of data points generated by buildings each day. We do this by working side by side with our customers to understand their operations, generating operational recommendations using Machine Learning algorithms, and delivering those recommendations across our multichannel platform.
At an implementation level we accomplish this by working with a diverse set of technologies (both hardware and software) to build and deliver a cohesive product to our end users. Some of the interesting technical challenges we deal with are:
- Developing engaging product features that motivate our users to take action in their buildings.
- Identifying and writing software to reduce manual processes.
- Capitalizing on business opportunities by applying innovative technologies in an industry that has historically lagged technical trends.
- Importing, storing, and serving gigabytes (and one day petabytes) of data.
Taking ownership of our Internal Tooling needs to allow our Customer Success team to scale their operational support of our clients.
Helping to build out a full building profile and model to be used to deliver fine grain recommendations at the zone, floor, and equipment level.
