We're an online education platform that's partnered with some of the best universities in the world. We connect learners from across the world with the best quality educational content online.

Our mission is to create the best online learning experience for everyone anywhere in the world and transform lives by helping people accelerate upwards in their careers.

Why join us?
  • Our > 30M learners can take content from a catalog of 2500 courses that are created by over 150 of the world's best universities

  • Our modern stack (Scala microservices on the backend and React apps on the frontend) and corresponding infrastructure allows engineers to deploy code over 20+ times a day

  • Our diversified business (consumer, enterprise and online degrees) is setup for success and is pushing the boundaries of education

Engineering at Coursera
Engineering team and processes
  • Engineering is split into 4 teams - infrastructure (frontend, backend, data), growth (everything before you enroll in a course), learner (everything after you enroll in a course), partner (everything for university and enterprise partners)
  • A culture of ownership and autonomy - engineers own and deploy their own code. 20+ deployments a day. Microservices architecture and modular frontend apps push for ownership.
Technical Challenges

We often have to think of novel solutions because no one has brought education from the offline world (campuses, etc) to the online world.

We have over 2,500 courses on the platform now and we're investing heavily in building personalization products which involve lots of interesting machine learning problems.

Executable code blocks are a specific new product we've built for learning coding that came with a lot of unique technical challenges. We have many unique product challenges that come up like this as we keep replicating parts of real world learning online. e.g. plagiarism detection.
