Biomedical R&D is at an all-time high, but clinical trials are still expensive, slow, and traditional. The reason is the limited pool of research hospitals which R&D sponsors (like pharmaceutical companies) can use to run their trials. The overhead and training required to do research constrains the supply of these research hospitals, and leads to massive inefficiency.

Curebase takes a new approach. We empower every physician to be a researcher with streamlined software. This lets us run any trial in parallel, and enables sponsors to bring new treatments to patients faster than ever.

Today, we use our growing physician network to power studies in many exciting areas of medicine, such as smoking cessation, STD testing, and nutrition. We have also participated in Y Combinator S18 and raised $2.5MM in seed funding.

Engineering at Curebase

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team operates in one-week iterations. Requirements are added to our backlog from user feedback and strategic planning, and prioritized by the whole team at our iteration kickoff meeting. Engineers pick which projects they are interested in owning from the list of top priorities. Tasks are tracked in Pivotal Tracker, and reviewed in GitHub before being merged. We stay coordinated with daily engineering chats. We release to production once or twice a week following engineer-driven QA.

Technical Challenges

Handling custom user workflows in a growing system that needs to scale to launching 5+ new clinical trials per month (not everyone can have a custom flow!).

Handling technological regulatory scrutiny from the FDA, HIPAA, GDPR, and ICH-GCP. Our validation and testing process, software development lifecycle, data integrity, electronic signature system, and audit logs must all be of the highest quality for us to handle customers submitting to the FDA.

Maintaining availability and quality in a healthcare environment.

Projects you might work on
  • A “trial builder” to let prospective research sponsors build a trial from scratch, as if it was an A/B test. They can then simply click a button to “deploy” the trial to Curebase.

  • An EMR integration to automatically pull doctor availability and completed lab reports from a doctors office.

  • A “trial matcher” to let patients and doctors choose which Curebase-run study to participate in.

  • A new doctor workflow to allow management of more than one concurrent trial participant at a time.
