At Cushion, our goal is to democratize access to financial help, not just financial advice - enabling consumers to waste less money, save more, and live financially healthier lives.

Our first service is a bot that negotiates with banks, on behalf of our customers, to get back money wasted on bank fees & credit card interest — a $200 Billion problem in the U.S. each year with no other digital solution until now.

Active Roles

Why join us?

  • We're building a company that has some serious social and financial impact as we're looking to help millions of Americans live financially healthier lives.

  • We've grown rapidly over the past year and have already waived over $2M worth of bank fees for our customers.

  • We've raised a $2.8M Seed round ($5.9M total so far) from some of the best FinTech investors:

  • Our business has accelerated since COVID-19 started because people absolutely need their bank fees waived to use that money for things like rent, food, utilities, and more

  • Our team has scaled revenue to billions of dollars at companies like Twitter and has expertise building secure scalable systems that process $50+ billion in transactions each year.

Engineering team and processes

We're a startup that's moving a mile a minute, and that makes it difficult to follow two-week development cycles. Every few weeks, our CEO (who used to be a Product Manager at Twitter) meets with our Lead Engineer to spec out all the outstanding dev work, prioritize it, and put anything that is missing into Trello. From there, the team works on the most urgent features in the prioritized order. For bigger ticket features or products, our CEO writes up product specs that are then reviewed by engineering and agreed upon before any development commences. Ivan Balepin leads our engineering team (he's a security and payments expert with 20+ years or development experience).

Technical Challenges
  • Building direct-to-bank integrations instead of using the popular data aggregator (Plaid) which all other FinTechs use
  • Building Machine Learning models to read and classify email responses sent to us by bank agents
  • Building models that write compelling emails to negotiate bank fees that look like they've been written by a human
  • Scaling a system that has to handle multiple communication channels at the same time (bot-to-consumer, bot-to-bank, bank-to-bot, etc..)
Projects you might work on
  • We currently support a handful of banks. One of the first projects you'll work on is implementing a new bank from scratch. This will include full stack work from getting through multi-factor authentication to filling out web forms to integrating the experience into our existing app.

  • Working on a variety of projects and optimizations to improve the customer experience, get customers to the aha! moment as fast as possible, and get them to spread the word with their friends and communities.

  • Building out our new money-saving of fee-avoiding product from scratch.
