Darby Smart is the leading platform for shoppable video - viewers can 'watch and shop', and our video creators can get paid. Our mission is to create a new economy for creatives and help our partner brands and retailers sell their products using authentic user-generated video. Our video creators film and publish thousands of videos on beauty, recipes and DIY, reaching millions of monthly viewers.
Based on the success of the Beauty video category, we are in the process of launching our first physical product line (Shero Science - https://www.sheroscience.com/). Once this brand is out of stealth, we will use the power of our UGC videos and creator community to promote and sell it.
We are VC-backed and have a killer leadership team and advisory board - our investors are Forerunner, CAA and Maveron. Nicole Farb (CEO, co-founder) came from the Venture Capital arm of Goldman Sachs, and our VP of Engineering (Chris Norris) is a startup veteran with multiple exits. Largest brands in the world love our product — We are working with some of the largest brands and retailers in the world. The content our community creates is the kind of content that brands either can't find, or can't get enough of, and we want to efficiently connect retailers and brands to that content.
Big mission — Our primary mission is to lead the industry in shoppable video; in turn unlocking everyone's creativity and turning people's hobbies into side hustles. Our users love to express themselves and build a following, and we aim to get them paid for doing something they already do just for fun.
The team has a flat structure, with people working on everything from APIs, to the iOS app, to the Web site, and the infrastructure. We operate in a continuous flow, with Engineering collaborating with Design, Marketing, Sales and Community on the feature-set to hit a particular goal. We use github and pull requests for coding and code reviews. We strive for a low-overhead environment, where engineers can focus on building.
We are less focused on being process-driven, but instead are behavior-driven. We value engineers who have drive to make an impact, strive not to waste any minute of time, and demonstrate complete ownership of their work and their decisions. They live up to their commitments and care about ensuring their features and updates are successful. They collaborate effectively with the whole business - realizing that this achieves better outcomes than they could by themselves, and demonstrate craftsmanship - they take pride in building maintainable, flexible, reusable, clean code and systems
Our challenges in engineering are how to build software that is flexible and adaptable, to allow us to quickly build and experiment with new features. Darby Smart is at a stage where we need to move fast to bring value to the business, and to help the company scale. Moving fast does not mean building a careless or hacky codebase - it means building robust, low-cost solutions to win the market we're in.

(Past project) Launch an e-commerce site for a new product line in 2 weeks (sounds a little crazy but the team did it!)
