At Debtsy, we work to ensure that borrowers who fall behind on debt are treated with dignity. Owing to outdated processes and bad actors, traditional debt collection is rife with harassment and fraud. Our products tackle this by helping financial institutions modernize collections, giving borrowers simpler and more compassionate ways to get back on track.
Why join us?
We're growing at an incredible clip—over 10x since the beginning of 2021. Because of the pandemic, there’s never been a more important time for our mission.
We're highly collaborative. There are no solo projects. Every effort is a collaboration between several engineers, product, and design. We constantly align, learn, and exchange feedback with one another.
Full product ownership. Engineers regularly discover, validate, design, and implement product end to end. You’re responsible for more than implementing a specification.
Engineering at Debtsy
Our processes are constantly evolving, not strictly tied to a framework. Every process and ritual—sprint planning, standup, bi-weekly team meetings, and product roadmap—is designed to facilitate information sharing, feedback and collaboration. We gather feedback on how we work on a regular basis, using this to improve. If a process doesn't serve you, it should probably change.
Working at Debtsy
There are no solo projects. Every effort is a collaboration between several engineers, product, and operations teammates. We constantly align, learn, and exchange feedback with one another.
We also offer extensive product ownership. Engineers regularly discover, validate, design, and implement product end to end. You’re responsible for more than implementing a specification.
Finally, we emphasize technical quality. Sustainable development is a competitive advantage, so code quality and simplicity is paramount. We also think less is more—we’re better off solving a problem without code than with it.
We think representation is key to equitable product decisions and organizations. It also helps us build teams—we want to be a welcoming place for all candidates, not just the ones that share our background.
To succeed, we’re intentional about building an inclusive environment and ensuring diversity in hiring. For starters, we look beyond traditional recruiting channels and criteria to ensure our pipeline includes historically marginalized groups. For example, we eliminate filters that correlate poorly with job performance, like school, GPA, or “top tech company”. We also recruit extensively from organizations with a track record of inclusion.
We explicitly track our efforts here and set ambitious goals. To be transparent, we’re tracking below our own expectations here: while our leadership includes women, our team currently tracks below industry standards for representation of women and other underrepresented groups. This can be attributed to over reliance on referrals in recruiting, resulting in a homogenous candidate pool. We’re doubling down on this strategy to course correct.
We ensure inclusive collaboration by making it an explicit accountability: everyone's performance depends on their ability to exchange feedback and include peers in their decision making, growth, and accomplishments. This manifests in our processes and norms.
Specifically, it's every manager's responsibility to ensure the success of every report. We solicit and assess upwards feedback constantly to ensure everyone has commensurate and fair access to opportunity and support necessary to succeed.
As part of our commitment to an inclusive workplace, we are happy to offer prospective engineers the chance to connect with our engineering employees who come from underrepresented backgrounds. It’s a way to get a better sense of our team and what it might be like to work with us.
If you’re interested in connecting with our team, be sure to bring this up during one of our introductory calls!
