Role Description

Our vision is to build the next generation platform to enable easy and fast creation of audio and video content powered by cutting-edge AI. Building a revolutionary way to record, transcribe, edit and mix spoken audio and video comes with a series of unique challenges and requires solving hard and complex problems.

As a senior member of the engineering team you'll play an integral role in the following:

  • Inventing an interaction paradigm that applies the intuitive simplicity of word processing to audio and video production
  • Pioneering use of Web technologies to deliver a high-performance professional creative tool that's traditionally been the domain of native desktop applications
  • Introducing real-time collaborative workflows to audio/video production, where individual projects can be in the tens or hundreds of gigabytes
  • Applying machine learning and artificial intelligence concepts that are currently relegated to academic research departments to the editing and synthesis of audio and video

  • Design and build complex systems in a reliable, scalable and performant manner
  • Actively mentor other members on the engineering team
  • Be an evangelist for elevating our engineering practices and processes
  • Discover, evaluate and adopt new technologies that can enhance our services and/or improve our efficiency
  • Dedicated to shipping a quality/bug free product through testable and tested code

  • BS or higher (e.g., MS or PhD) in Computer Science or related technical field involving coding (e.g., physics or mathematics)
  • 7+ years of professional software development experience
  • Strong CS fundamentals and experience building and scaling distributed systems
  • Fluent with deployment on Linux/Unix Systems (we are on Heroku, AWS and Google Cloud) and Docker
  • Self aware of strengths and seeking to constantly learn and improve
  • Strong written and verbal communication

Descript HQ is in San Francisco, and our A.I. research team - Lyrebird, is based in Montreal.

We feel Descript is the special company that's in possession of both product market fit and the raw materials (passionate user community, great product, large market) for growth, but is still early enough that each new employee has a measurable influence on the direction of the company.

We rely on self-starters who do their best work when given the freedom to translate the company's high level goals into their day-to-day priorities.

Benefits include equity, a generous healthcare package, catered lunches, and unlimited vacation time.

About Descript

Descript is a fast-growing audio/video production platform that makes creating media as fast and easy as using a word processor, launched in December 2017 and backed by Andreesen Horowitz.

Company Culture

At Descript, we’re building a tool that many of our customers will use every day. So we believe that the way to build a great business is to simply build a product that customers love to use. And we believe that the best way to build a great product is by pushing down decision making authority to the builders on the front lines. We work hard to make sure everyone here is empowered with the context necessary to know what to build for our customers, and then give them the autonomy to build it.
