Discord lets you have a LAN party over the internet. Our product is what Skype would look like if it was designed for video game players specifically. This makes the gaming experience more immersive and social.
1) We operate a massively distributed, real time communication system. We have the high throughput requirements of voice chat to deal with too. You get to work on real time systems at scale, which is exciting (and hard).
2) Our voice chat infrastructure is built on Elixir and Erlang. You'll have to think through how to deal with issues like voice latency while still providing a great experience.
3) We get DDOS'ed a lot, dealing with that is fun :)
