Why join us?

  • We are tapping into the underserved student entrepreneur space. Our aim is to empower the next generation of business leaders by giving them a launchpad to convert side hustles into business ventures.

  • Right now, we're in beta with just 4 universities in the US. The growth plan is to soon launch in all California universities and then continue to expand state by state / region by region from there. Eventually, we will consider taking the product internationally.

  • The company is privately funded and has a board made up of some big players in the tech industry. Can't divulge them just yet.

Engineering at Dormzi LLC

Engineering team and processes

There are currently 4 software engineers and 2 QA automation engineers. We're looking to double this team in the next couple of months.

Our process is similar to SCRUM with a 2-week sprint. However, we don't fully stick to SCRUM as the process needs to constantly evolve and adapt to our own needs. Most startups are stressful, and it's not sustainable, so one of our strict rules for the process is maintaining velocity while not overloading the team.

Technical Challenges

As a startup, our biggest challenge is how to make changes as fast as possible. This means writing clean and structured code that's ready to be taken apart and repurposed or rebuilt. To ensure quality while keeping the team as lean as possible, our code also needs to be resilient and almost bug-free right off the bat, which demands the engineers to have a high degree of craftsmanship and experiences.

All this becomes even harder when balanced with short-term business needs, which means the engineers need to be strategic in avoiding solving all the engineering problems at first while having a plan to circle back and gradually knock them off.

These are the challenges that require our engineering team to stay in close communication everyday to brainstorm, negotiate, and balance pros & cons to achieve the most optimal outcome.

Projects you might work on
  • Our first project ever was to take over a fresh React Native code base from an outsourcing partner. There were a lot of issues with the code, but given the stage of the business, we needed users and data as soon as possible. Therefore, we decided to fix all the issues and launch what we had within 5 months.

  • When the system was live, we went back and rebuilt the architecture from the ground up. This includes migrating from Firebase to MongoDB, integrating Apollo GraphQL, coming up with a standard coding style, implementing a brand new design, and rewriting almost everything.

  • After a year in, we've learned enough about our users and decided to slightly pivot. Our new strategy requires a shift from mobile app to predominantly web. It was a sharp turn, but thanks to our coding practice, a lot of the original building blocks built for ReactNative were reusable on React with only a few modifications. To tie things together, we shifted to a monorepo setup with Lerna, thus allowing common logic to be shared across mobile apps and web.
