Dwelo’s mission is to make the experience of living and working in managed dwellings more magical, efficient, and connected.
We turn apartment buildings into smart communities by connecting building infrastructure like perimeter doors, lights, locks, thermostats, and sensors to powerful web, mobile, and voice applications. Technology transformed the way people think about efficiency, convenience, and security when buying a home. We’re making it possible to enjoy an even better experience when you rent one.
Why join us?
We are installed in and powering the smart devices for thousands of homes already, with many thousands of apartments in many markets on the way. We are a basic and fundamental part of the daily routine of countless people.
Dwelo already works with dozens of devices and we are adding more to our catalog all of the time. If tinkering with the cutting edge of new connected devices, or building a vast network of IoT device nodes with all kinds of forms and functions excites you, then you can't work for a better company than Dwelo.
We focus on environmentalism backed by data and device intelligence. Our smart devices, integrations and analytics platforms are being designed to prevent energy and water waste, while giving accurate and current data on utility usage in apartment buildings.
Engineering at Dwelo
We have a flat hierarchy engineering team. Subteams are organized around delivering projects which might cut across multiple components in the stack.
We have two week sprints, each with a planning session, a backlog grooming session, and a combined retro/demo session.
Github, pull requests, and Travis CI are critical parts of our development process. We push our code through a staging environment before deploying to production. It's fun. Everyone gets to and should do it. We're always improving our infrastructure around canarying deploys, gradual (but frequent!) deploys, and quick rollbacks (when needed!).
We are building a data platform that will be gathering and warehousing millions of sensor data points to perform predictive analytics on them.
We are vastly expanding the number and type of devices our platform can integrate with, including those with low powered radios and others that are managed through REST interfaces.
Building a smart apartment complex is hard work. Making it always do the right thing at the right time, while never displeasing or surprising a resident or manager is a colossal engineering effort — but one that is incredibly rewarding and interesting.
You might work on our device synchronization infrastructure to make sure that the state of every one of our (tens of) thousands of devices is perfectly reflected to all authorized subscribers or controllers, including our cloud services.
Or you might work on our hubs, building zwave/zigbee/bluetooth control software for exciting new device types.
Or you might work on integrating with higher-powered devices which are reachable through REST APIs.
Or you might work on our data platform, ingesting millions of sensor samples and writing code for streaming analytics, anomaly detection, and preemptive problem notification.
Or you might work on one of our more secret projects.
Working at Dwelo
We are innovators, tinkerers and, dogfooders with the customer always present in mind. We encourage every employee to install Dwelo in their home. Playing with, hacking, and discovering new devices is fun, and that spirit of exploration is critical to pushing Dwelo engineering forward. We're a company of builders that loves to the effects of our creations in the real world. And because of that, we are astutely and deeply aware of how many people rely on Dwelo in their homes.
We have an unlimited vacation policy. We know that can be exploitative, and some people feel like it's never a good time to take a vacation. That's why we mandate a minimum of two weeks of vacation a year, preferably with at least one week contiguous .
