Engineering at Dwelo

Engineering team and processes

We have a flat hierarchy engineering team. Subteams are organized around delivering projects which might cut across multiple components in the stack.

We have two week sprints, each with a planning session, a backlog grooming session, and a combined retro/demo session.

Github, pull requests, and Travis CI are critical parts of our development process. We push our code through a staging environment before deploying to production. It's fun. Everyone gets to and should do it. We're always improving our infrastructure around canarying deploys, gradual (but frequent!) deploys, and quick rollbacks (when needed!).

Technical Challenges

We are building a data platform that will be gathering and warehousing millions of sensor data points to perform predictive analytics on them.

We are vastly expanding the number and type of devices our platform can integrate with, including those with low powered radios and others that are managed through REST interfaces.

Building a smart apartment complex is hard work. Making it always do the right thing at the right time, while never displeasing or surprising a resident or manager is a colossal engineering effort — but one that is incredibly rewarding and interesting.

Projects you might work on
  • You might work on our device synchronization infrastructure to make sure that the state of every one of our (tens of) thousands of devices is perfectly reflected to all authorized subscribers or controllers, including our cloud services.

    Or you might work on our hubs, building zwave/zigbee/bluetooth control software for exciting new device types.

    Or you might work on integrating with higher-powered devices which are reachable through REST APIs.

    Or you might work on our data platform, ingesting millions of sensor samples and writing code for streaming analytics, anomaly detection, and preemptive problem notification.
