Active Roles
Why join us?
  • We provide commitment-free high quality furniture at a low monthly rate and keep tons of furniture out of landfills.

  • We closed a $30M seed round of funding at the end of 2018. Seed investors included Jeff Wilke, CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer. We're currently in the middle of raising the A round.

  • Revenue has grown almost 10 times year over year, and the A round will allow us to accelerate the growth and expand into more markets across the U.S.

  • We're thoughtful and deliberate about creating an inclusive and diverse company with a culture that values cross-functional collaboration, giving back, and paying it forward.

Engineering at Fernished, Inc.
Engineering team and processes

We have one week sprints, and push code to production multiple times each week. All engineers are Full Cycle Developers and collaborate with stakeholders across all functions of the company.

Product owns the feature roadmap. Related stories are grouped into epics and each epic has an engineering owner who is responsible for helping product and product design write the stories, coordinate the development effort with all stakeholders, ensure a successful deployment, and support the features in production. All engineers are designated owners of at least one epic, with more senior engineers being entrusted with more concurrent epic ownerships.

Architecting and designing software solutions is part science, part art, part experience, so we often have collaborative design sessions with everybody on the team so we can share, learn and grow together.

All code changes are submitted as pull requests, peer reviewed, and acceptance tested by stakeholders.

Every non-junior engineer rotates through a weekly duty known as Arrow. Arrow receives all PagerDuty alerts, triages incoming support tickets, coordinates releases, stages candidate builds and promotes staged builds to production.

Technical Challenges

We're switching our backend from a monolithic traditional model-view-controller architecture to a hybrid event-driven architecture with we plan to follow up with event orchestration and serverless micro services.

Pushing real time inventory information to web clients, Facebook Catalog, and other 3rd party services with various service limits also pose some interesting challenges.

Warehouses often have terrible WiFi coverage and delivery crews has to be able to use our asset tracking app and delivery management software regardless of cell phone coverage. Caching and synchronizing data for offline and partially offline operation is not trivial.

Projects you might work on
  • Implement the React Native frontend and Rails backend of an asset-tracking and work-order mobile app. Study workflows and processes in our warehouses and follow delivery crews, then work closely with product, product design and operations to define the requirements and features to be implemented.

  • Migrate CI/CD infrastructure from CircleCI and Heroku to managing our own CI/CD pipeline and infrastructure on AWS. This includes code changes to accommodate changes in resource management, secrets management, automated builds and publishing of Docker container to private registries, and automated infrastructure management and deployment with AWS CloudFormation.

  • Work closely with product, product design and operations to design and implement a UI framework for all internal pages that help us run the business efficiently, while enabling developers to build out new functionality delightfully with minimal boilerplate, consistency, and great efficiency.

  • Evaluate Apache Kafka deployed to AWS with Kinesis for best suitability to serve as event bus in an event driven architecture on dimensions like performance, event auditing, maintainability, monitoring, automated alerting, and automated scalability. Then integrate and implement the chosen technology in our tech stack.

  • Work closely with product and product design to design and implement a host of consumer facing UI features that allow customers to self-service all aspects of their existing subscriptions to furniture in their homes.

Working at Fernished, Inc.

Everyone is on the team because we believe in the company mission — building a great, profitable business while helping people to affordable quality furniture, and keeping furniture out of landfills.

We also encourage cross-functional collaboration and love the bias for action and empowerment, while having a decent work/life balance (really, an great balance for an early stage startup). That's not to say we're strictly 9 to 5, but we're all here because we love what we do, and out elsewhere during evenings and weekends to be with family, friends, recharge and have fun!

Doctor appointments, kids sick days, pet troubles, repairs and other life events happens. We have flexible hours and understand when people need to take an ad-hoc day working from home to also take care of other stuff.

Other

Flexible Hours

Team Activities

Some of us love playing board games during lunch, we have a dollar bets club that initiates all kinds of daring and entertaining challenges, and at least once a month we have a company sponsored dinner followed by a team activity.

Pet Friendly

We welcome all well-behaved pets. Our chief product officer and our director of finance each bring their dogs on a regular basis.
