The Role

We’re looking for a full-stack software engineer to help us scale the business and solve interesting e-commerce, supply chain, and inventory management challenges. As an early member of the engineering team, you will have a big impact on the system design, software development process, and company culture.

You will be joining a team who loves to collaborate in a cross-functional environment. Every engineer on the team works closely with product, UX, design, marketing, business development, operations and customer service to support the business goals and priorities.

Our software development process includes:

  • Weekly Scrum sprints
  • Test Driven Development
  • Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment
  • Full Cycle Development

The Tech Stack

We have a pragmatic approach to technology as a means to an end: solving interesting problems. We don’t believe any one programming language, framework or technology is the be-all, do-all, only answer.

Our current languages and technologies include:

  • Ruby on Rails
  • Elm and JavaScript
  • Docker
  • Postgres and Redshift
  • Kinesis
  • Redis

You don't need specific experience with any of these technologies as long as you have some experience with comparable technologies and you’re open to learning on the go.

Responsibilities

At Fernish, you will:

  • Be responsible for the design, development and maintenance of features across our stack.
  • Collaboratively investigate design approaches, prototype new technology and evaluate technical feasibility.
  • Partner with product owners, internal customers, and leadership to identify correct development priorities.
  • Balance moving with urgency while ensuring reliability, scalability and efficiency is addressed as we go.

Requirements

  • You are proficient with object oriented design and general software design patterns.
  • You have experience with both client-side and server-side development
  • You have experience with Git or similar version control systems.

Benefits

  • Excellent health-care plans from carriers like Aetna, Blue Cross and Kaiser Permanente. Fully paid for employees and 2/3 paid for dependents.
  • Great dental and vision plans
  • Paid maternity/paternity leave
  • Minimum 3 weeks paid personal time off
  • Flexible work hours

Opportunity

We’d love to hear from you if you think you’re a good fit for the role — even if you don’t meet all of the requirements.

We are an equal opportunity employer and treasure diversity at our company. Let’s talk and see how your unique experiences and skills can add value to our team, and we can benefit your career growth.

About Fernished, Inc.

Fernish is a subscription service for your home. We create a flexible and inspired home experience for an increasingly mobile society. We let you choose the home furnishings you want and however long you want them, for one monthly subscription price.

Fernish was founded in 2017 and is backed by Techstars and a group of notable angel and institutional investors. We have been featured in the New York Times, Forbes, Entrepreneur, GeekWire, LA Business Journal, and Cheddar TV among other local and national publications.

Company Culture

Everyone is on the team because we believe in the company mission — building a great, profitable business while helping people to affordable quality furniture, and keeping furniture out of landfills.

We also encourage cross-functional collaboration and love the bias for action and empowerment, while having a decent work/life balance (really, an great balance for an early stage startup). That's not to say we're strictly 9 to 5, but we're all here because we love what we do, and out elsewhere during evenings and weekends to be with family, friends, recharge and have fun!

Doctor appointments, kids sick days, pet troubles, repairs and other life events happens. We have flexible hours and understand when people need to take an ad-hoc day working from home to also take care of other stuff.
