Engineering at Fraction

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team is just starting to be built out (1 engineer & our CTO currently). Our founder & CTO has previously worked as a senior engineer at Brex, has also worked in a data science role, and has worked in distributed systems at a visual effects company that works on the Marvel films. He started his career in robotics.

Since we are so small, our processes are extremely lightweight. When starting a new project, we create a simple design document outlining the requirements of the project, determine what success and failure looks like, etc. We meet 3 times a week for a 5 minute standup (although it usually takes about 2 minutes). If there's frontend work, the engineer is expected to work directly with our product designer, and there may also be a requirements-gathering phase with other stakeholders in the company (if it is a system for the Ops team to use, for example)

Other than that, pretty standard processes. We have CI/CD systems set up, code goes through PR reviews before being merged into main.

Technical Challenges

Since we are still in early phases of building the system, there's lots of interesting architectural design work still going on. Because we are working in such an old industry that generally hasn't seem a lot of innovation, integrations with existing systems can be a bit... byzantine.

The complexity of mortgage applications also makes for quite interesting onboarding flows. Unlike most onboarding flows which may only need 4 or 5 data points (name, address, etc), our onboarding has over 100 different pieces of information we need to collect. This means that there is a huge emphasis in a) making that process as painless as possible, and b) designing the systems so that we can begin to automate away different pieces of this flow.

Projects you might work on
  • You could be building our automated underwriting engine, which will see an applicant's name and other basic info, and be able to pull in all required info from a variety of different data sources and then automatically make a decision based on rules, risk determination, etc.

  • You would be building our user dashboard in React that will be the central hub for all interaction with Fraction.

  • You will be building integrations with a variety of partners to collect data and other required information to verify a user's application.

Once COVID is over, we are hoping to have a company retreat of some kind - TBD when that happens!
