We closed a $165M Series B on July 24, the second-largest ever in the diagnostic space. Total funds raised equal $243M from the most well-respected venture firms across tech and life sciences, including RA Capital, Polaris Partners, Perceptive Advisors, Andreessen Horowitz, funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc., GV (formerly Google Ventures), Roche Venture Fund, Kaiser Permanente Ventures, American Cancer Society’s BrightEdge Ventures, Data Collective Venture Capital, and Verily Life Sciences (formerly Google Life Sciences). These funds will allow us to launch our FDA validation study in Q1 2020 for our colorectal cancer screen and rapidly scale the Freenome team.
Freenome recently published our first peer-reviewed paper in BMC Cancer showing our pioneering ability to predict the detection of colon cancer in retrospective samples at 85% sensitivity / 85% specificity in cell-free DNA (cfDNA). Blood-based methods using cfDNA are the latest advancement under development to use as an alternative to existing screening tests which are not sufficient to detect cancer at its earliest stage.

Our scientific approach using multiomics highlights our longterm vision: building a platform to ingest clinical-grade, high-dimensional biological data which will allow us to build a sustainable, scalable pipeline of products, from a blood test to detect colon cancer, to multicancer screening, and beyond.
The engineering team is organized into Scrum and Kanban teams running in 2-week sprints. We use agile SDLC and DevOps strategies. Engineers are key stakeholders in our matrixed organization, interacting with Molecular, Computational, and ML Scientists day in and day out.
We’re bringing together industry advancements in science and technology to build the systems and software which enable our teams to spot the patterns in noisy biological signals via blood plasma.
We are building a state-of-the-art, workflow-based systems supporting our bioinformatics pipeline and ML platform to be the envy of the biotech field, as well as improve and save peoples’ lives. This will be the world's largest discoverable colorectal cancer dataset, properly processed and with longitudinal data over time which allows us to apply machine learning on a scale never before possible. Think ImageNet, but for colorectal cancer and eventually beyond.
Our software and systems must be highly adaptable for the various scientific users of our company. This means you will work cross-functionally with other teams throughout the organization, driving your own initiatives and building human-centric systems from the ground up.
Our machine learning platform is how Freenome creates novel, groundbreaking, and product-creating classifiers. It must be flexible enough to handle rapid experimentation while also meeting strict regulatory goals for FDA approved Software as a Medical Device guideline. Careful considerations must be made for today’s needs and development while considering scaling for the future once our product is on the market. Some challenges include - Data validity/synchronization in a microservice-land - Realtime single-source-of-truth data vs. snapshot learning models - How to realistically handle petabyte-scale data
Research Software and Data Pipelines: Going from raw data to usable, quality-controlled data in a trackable, stable, reliable, replicable manner. Our teams sequence an individual’s full genome, which equates to about 1TB of data per person, to analyze and decode the billions of complex patterns associated with the body's response to specific tumor types.
Long term projects and bigger picture growth include continuing to integrate with external components to commercialize the product, such as CRM, billing, etc. We’re laying the groundwork and your role will directly impact the future roadmap and vision as the team continues to scale.
