Going Merry is co-founded by Stanford and CMU grads and is building a community of students, who we help win scholarships. We are live in over 300 schools since we launched in August and signed up 1500 students in the last week alone; all without spending a dollar on marketing. We just closed an oversubscribed seed round and are planning to expand our engineering team. Engineering team and processes

We work in one or two week sprints. We start each week by prioritizing the backlog and deciding what tickets will be in the following two sprints. Charlie will give feedback from users and priorities for the business, Jacob will offer mockups / wireframes for all the team to discuss and the engineering team will offer time estimates. Once decisions are made the tickets are broken into bite sized tasks on JIRA. Each morning we have a quick team meeting in which engineering updates us on their work / any issues.

Technical Challenges

Building software for three distinct users: students , sponsors and college counselors. Students require an interactive user experience, social network features as well as a matching tool for scholarships; sponsors require application management SaaS and data analytics; counselors require tracking tools and an ability to interact with their students on Going Merry. We also need to integrate with financial partners. Finally, we employ machine learning to recommend scholarships to students and to simplify the application process (e.g. by recognizing similar essay prompts).
