Engineering at Golden

Engineering team and processes

Structure of the engineering team is fairly flat and meritocratic. We have 12 engineers right now and we refer to the person with the most skill in a certain area to take judgement calls in that area (while cross checking it against our vision and principles). We do daily scrums at 10AM to make sure everyone is on track and not blocked. We also have a full team presentation every Tuesday at 10AM to go over all progress of the last week and what we want to achieve this week. We appropriately check PRs from each other when needed and jump into helping each other if requested.

We are running continuous deployment using CircleCI and have linting setup. Every Friday we check for rogue PRs that are hanging out and clean them up. We run a series of tests before deploying our work into production and usually test in staging systems to make sure the project meets its objectives and it meaningful. Our process is under continuous improvement and we are open all make it better. The processes are build by the engineers as well so that they have consensus and buy in to what we execute on. We have a variety of Slack channels setup to make everyones life much easier.

Technical Challenges
  1. Building a product and related systems for extreme mass usage and scale.
  2. Working on the objective of mapping human knowledge.
  3. Dealing with optimizing algorithms. For example, our diffing engine.
  4. Building complex multi part systems. For example, ontology and attribute mapping, clustering of topics or subjectivity detection in language.
Projects you might work on
  • Create a reverse merge conflict system that can extract previous diffs over a range of data fields.

  • Use NLP to build ontologies around topics and use summerization algos for abstracts in academic papers.

  • Build scrapers and parsers to pull attributes on topics.

  • Build a modern citation system that supports anti evidence, source trust ranking and other features.

  • Create ultra large scale relational databases of topics.
