Grailed is a curated e-commerce marketplace for men's and women's luxury fashion. Our goal is to provide an interactive and educational meeting ground where fashion enthusiasts can buy and sell their unique pieces.
We have a proven business model with strong revenue and product/market fit. We were profitable in the past, but are now investing in our growth.
The company and product are both growing quickly. The team has doubled in size in the past year, and we plan to double again in the next 12-18 months.
One founder founded a company that went through YC in 2009 and the other was the sixth employee at Venmo. The Head of Product was the VP of Product at Wayfair.
Grailed is funded by Thrive Capital and Index Ventures. Thrive Capital has also invested in companies like Instagram, Twitch, Stripe and Warby Parker. Index Ventures has also invested in companies such as Squarespace, Etsy, Soundcloud and Dropbox.
Our engineering team is organized into many cross-functional squads. Each squad is addressing a business goal such as converting new traffic into active users.
Squads are composed of engineers, product managers, designers, and employees from other functions such as analytics or support. The goal is for every squad to have all the competencies and resources it needs in order to work autonomously and be set up for success.
Engineers typically work with a designer and any other interested parties to spec a feature, then work on the feature individually or via pairing. We use Pull Requests on Github to review one another's work and ensure that all test suites pass. Engineers are empowered to push code to production, which we often do multiple times a day.
We have an emotionally intelligent, support, collaborative, fun team and don't take ourselves too seriously.
We have the luxury of needing to scale our infrastructure to support the growth of the platform. For example, our userbase is large enough that we were required to develop strategies to notify them all, via push notifications, in a way that doesn't result in us DDoSing ourselves.
We've also grown organically without many table-stakes e-commerce features. There are a ton of amazing product initiatives we'll be building this year in next. More details below!
Currently every visitor receives the same version of the website. Ideally we would tailor the experience to each user's tastes.
This initiative will be a huge engineering and data lift. We need to design and implement a system that understands a user's tastes by virtue of a large set of parameters (purchases, offers, articles read, etc) resulting in bespoke merchandising and outreach.
Real-time processing and complex data science will be required to make this experience truly world class.
Since all listings are user generated, it's difficult to determine if two listings are identical. This prevents us from implementing advanced pricing recommendations, transaction facilitation, and other advanced e-commerce features. Transaction facilitation would allow us to match buyers and sellers for a unique type of garment or shoe. E.g., currently, you would need to browse the inventory to find all Yeezy 700 Mauve sneakers, and independently negotiate with each seller. Ideally, you'd make an offer on that type of good, and the system would programmatically facilitate the transaction.
