Engineering at GYANT

Engineering team and processes

The technical team currently consists of: CTO (data scientist/engineer), 8 full-time engineers, and 3 full-time data scientists, plus data science intern. We have a very egalitarian culture; we believe in meritocracy of ideas. The challenges we are tackling are very inter-disciplinary, and require constant collaboration between medical, engineering, data science and product. Each of us wears many different hats on owns different components. We have weekly sprints, and daily stand-up meetings. We move fast and break things, iterating quickly. We give feedback to one another constantly. We believe in freedom and accountability.

Technical Challenges

Our core challenge is creating a state-of-the-art medical ML-based diagnosis engine, that knows both which questions to ask, and which condition(s) and treatment(s) to diagnose and prescribe. To make this happen we have been building a number of other ML/NLP components, including concept extraction, intent detection, spelling correction, and others. Another interesting technical challenge is validation and versioning of our complex internal data (question, symptoms, conditions, diagnostic rules, etc). Yet another is monitoring and error tracking of our micro-service infrastructure. Yet another is user behavior analytics.

Projects you might work on
  • Internal tools for validation/versioning of Gyant medical content (symptoms, conditions, questions). E.g. when questions are edited over time, how can we (i) understand what past patient cases are affected and (ii) which version of content did a particular patient see.

  • Internal reporting of user behavior, e.g. (i) where in the dialogues are the users getting stuck/drop off (ii) which user medical questions/intents get misunderstood (iii) how e.g. number of questions affect drop-off rates.
