We're building a payments network that enables consumers to pay recurring bills directly from payroll direct deposits and get access to better credit.
Why join us?
We're innovative. We are the first ones to build a Payments network that allows any biller to get paid straight from payroll. So you'll be working on new problems and new challenges that no one else has ever seen.
Our founders are experienced. The CTO has done four start-ups, including two that had successful exits. All three founders have experience in Fintech, with leadership roles at Salary Finance, Lending Club, Twine by John Hancock, and Marcus by Goldman Sachs. We know the solutions customers need, and we know the 2021 ways to solve them.
We are pre-product, so you will get your chance to have a huge impact. We have great Seed funding from two VC-firms, so this initial team of 14 people have the freedom to build something that really helps people, and each engineer will own meaningful parts of that build.
Engineering at Highline
We run a bi-weekly development cycle but many of our projects are more unbounded, hard problems so we're not strictly agile.
We start the week on Monday to review what we got done last week and review what we want to get done this week in order to make sure we're on track to hitting our team-committed timelines and goals.
We use Github and Github PRs to review code. Designs/Specs are created where useful. We optimize for speed, product quality, and data consistency. All our engineers have a large degree of autonomy in accomplishing their goals. There is a lot of collaboration and sanity checking conversation that happens in Slack and helps keep everyone on the same page.
Working at Highline
Upward is open. We understand that the only way we will create a world-class product is by building a world-class team. The culture is designed to get the best of everyone- their work, thoughts, opinions, and teamwork. Every employee impacts the product AND the culture, because we ask, listen, and seek to understand the ideas and inputs from the entire team.
At Upward, we understand that our strength is our diversity. We want to build a product that helps real Americans working real jobs, so we need to attract and retain a team that represents our end customers. And the DNA of the company is in the numbers... an image of our team (photo or statistics) should look like a snapshot of our nation (in pictures or numbers).
Upward is committed to recruiting, sourcing, and selecting from diverse and inclusive channels. And when people join, we'll sit down with you to ask,
What is your learning journey? How can we support your personal and professional development? We meet as a team every week to ask,
What could we be doing better? What is your experience like? And each individual contributor meets with their manager once we week to talk about everything from tasks, to two-way feedback, to coaching.
At Upward, we have a mentoring culture. Work with us to set your development and support plan, and we will work to bring you the resources we need to succeed. Our top tier Venture Capital firms give us access to diversity and inclusion resources that are truly amazing. So whether it is a mentor you can relate with, industry resources you can learn from, or simply a sounding board to help you get conviction in your position, we are committed to getting you a boost in your career.
As part of our commitment to an inclusive workplace, we are happy to offer prospective engineers the chance to connect with our engineering employees who come from underrepresented backgrounds. It’s a way to get a better sense of our team and what it might be like to work with us.
If you’re interested in connecting with our team, be sure to bring this up during one of our introductory calls!
Take at least two weeks vacation, please! People need time off to recharge and pursue life's passions. Probably don't take more than four weeks vacation in a year- we are building a product and a company after all, and we need to ship product.
Make things happen, be there (that could be in person, on a video call, or via Slack) when you need to collaborate or problem-solve with others, and we're never going to check the clock. In 2021, contribution is measured in how much you contributed to a product that helps a person, rather than counting hours on a clock.
We cover the majority of the cost of medical and dental for you and your family.
Work from Home
We are open to remote work, and even if you are in the geography, we don't need face time, we need great code. Work from home, and if you are in the DFW area come in a day or two a week to build the relationships and trust that make work enjoyable.
