Engineering team and processes

The engineering team at Hinge operates based on a pod model, along with other members of the greater R&D team.

The general idea is that pods are formed around specific business missions, such as internal tooling for health coaches, business intelligence tools, core mobile app experience, etc.. The goal for each pod is to be as fully autonomous as possible.

In a given pod, you will have (at minimum) an Engineering Lead, a Project Manager, and optionally a Design Lead. The Engineering Lead is the go-to for leading architectural and day-to-day software work. By keeping relevant team members close together we keep the number of collaboration meetings/sessions down to a minimum.

Within the pod model, we employ a fairly standard weekly sprint process with issue tracking, kanban boards, and all the fun that comes with it.

Technical Challenges

Supporting our proprietary BLE (Bluetooth Low-Energy) devices in the wild is always an interesting challenge, both from the software side (supporting a zoo of Android devices and their BLE stacks) and the technical support side (did you turn it off and on again?).

By far our biggest challenge is nailing the user experience such that our users are able to intuitively complete exercises on their own. Ideally this requires minimal guidance from our customer support team or the health coach. Because our audience is so diverse and includes people with varying degrees of disability, this is a core focus for our product team.
