We make it easy for people to have the best retirement plan made by robots and humans working together.

Human Interest is a Y Combinator-backed company that offers an easy and affordable 401(k) retirement plan for the modern workforce. We've built an automated, paperless 401(k) that makes it possible for small and medium-sized businesses to offer a 401(k) benefit to their employees — something that only 14% of them are able to do today. In doing so, we're empowering businesses of any size to safeguard the financial futures of their employees.

Human Interest acknowledges the fundamental value and dignity of all people. We've pledged ourselves to developing and maintaining an environment that respects diverse traditions, ideas, heritages, and experiences. We're committed to honoring our differences by accepting nothing less than equitable treatment of all applicants and employees.

Diversity and inclusion help us do better as a business, and we deliberately build processes to create a workplace where all are welcome and accepted. We're proactive and purposeful in prioritizing diversity and inclusion internally not only because it's the right thing to do, but also because we believe it's the only way to effectively create products and services that can be truly helpful to all people.

Human Interest is an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, veteran or military status, or any other characteristics protected under federal, state, or local laws.

Engineering at Human Interest

Engineering team and processes

We operate on a one week sprint cycle, meeting weekly to discuss the metrics and backlog. We do a big roadmap meeting quarterly to identify the top 15 projects we'd like to accomplish.

We have two teams and four streams of work: 1. General product (team/project) 2. Firefighter (one engineer, General Product, reactive) 3. Quick Win (one engineer, General Product, Unit Stories, ad-hoc product requests, proactive) 4. Recordkeeping Systems (team/project)

Technical Challenges

Creating a product that's simple and intuitive for a broad range of users — We're automating 401(k) plans, which can be a tricky system on its own for people to understand. This gives us the opportunity to experiment to see how we can best overcome the behavioral hurdles in users' minds.

Writing clean, accurate backend automation code that scales — We need to be able to represent and optimize a lot of relational data, not to mention keep it synced across multiple systems, including legacy retirement planning software.

Projects you might work on
  • Payroll and HRIS Integrations — Some payroll and HRIS systems give us an API, or a CSV file drop, or we need to automate a browser. This is very challenging to lower the maintenance cost.

  • Compliance Metrics — There are 20 things that we are required to do by law, which includes tracking the deliverability of email. How do we know that we're doing it within the appropriate SLAs?

  • Participant Exclusion — We notice when employees join your company through your payroll records, but we can't tell if they are temporary or interns, which would make them ineligible for your 401(k) program. What is the easiest way for an administrator to tell us this?

Working at Human Interest

We enjoy having idealistic and talented people on our team of excellent human beings. You'll be encouraged in your growth and your ideas will be given shape, substance, and support. Your objectives, as part of a quarterly OKR collaboration, will include time to read and deepen your craft.

We practice agile and hue close to its manifesto, with a bring your whole self to work strategy: your manager will push you to take more vacation and more sick leave, more emphasis on rest. Just as you will push to do your very best work and burn brightly while collaborating and coding and debugging.

As an employee benefits company, benefits are very important to us, and at Human Interest our philosophy is to be generous when it comes to employees' wellness. We invest in the long-term physical, financial, and emotional well-being of our employees.
