Why join us?

  • We give the people fighting financial crimes superpowers. Our service is designed to enhance anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing investigations. It reduces cumbersome paperwork, provides insightful analytics, and enables collaboration for compliance professionals and law enforcement agents.

We’re on a mission to turn the tables against criminals who pollute our financial system. Modern criminals are sophisticated, tech-savvy, and agile. The tools used to fight financial crimes should be, too.

  • You will be writing software to help to fight financial crime, thereby contributing to the fight against fraud and money laundering, and all that hides behind it. These are not victimless, white-collar crimes. The people who launder money are primarily engaged in distributing drugs, human trafficking, and the illegal sales of guns.

  • Our team has deep technical experience, as well as deep regulatory experience. The technical team hails from Square, Circle, Apple and IDEO. The regulatory team comes from KPMG, Treliant Risk Advisors, the Treasury Department, and other associated bodies.

Engineering at Hummingbird

Engineering team and processes

As part of our expert product team, you will make a tremendous impact on the product, the codebase, the supporting infrastructure, and the culture of our growing company. You will also have the opportunity to learn and participate in just about every part of running a company.

Our normal process uses is to create a PR on Github. All PR's must be code reviewed and pass tests before they can be merged to master. All PR's must also have tests to accompany the code changes. Once main pasts tests with the latest commit, it's automatically deployed to our staging environment.

Technical Challenges

We handle data around payments, loans, securities, banking activity, international remittances, and cryptocurrencies. All of this data needs to be handled with security and privacy in mind.

Our customers send us a wide variety of data, in many different formats. We have to detect and classify the type of data coming in, and parse it appropriately into a common schema.

The data that we're handling is extremely sensitive, and could potentially be used as part of a criminal case. With that in mind, we've taken many precautions to ensure that data is encrypted, does not leak outside of Hummingbird, and cannot be easily manipulated internally.

Projects you might work on
  • Build a mechanism to easily support the ingestion of millions of data points, and ensure they are all processed correctly by our system.

Working at Hummingbird

  • We know how to make trade offs when building features and systems.

  • We are comfortable with ambiguity.

  • Nothing is precious. We love the process and the iteration. We're not married to specific ideas or solutions, and regularly throw out work.

  • We want to be more than hands on a keyboard, and know that our impact goes beyond the lines of code we write.

  • We're honest with ourselves and our peers about our strengths, weaknesses and what we can accomplish. We're constantly questioning our assumptions.

  • We care about correctness, automated testing and data security. We are careful and methodical and incorporate security into our thinking at every stage of development.

  • We want to learn, and know that we can. We like digging deeply into new technologies, new domains or new ideas. We're excited to take on something we've never done before.

  • We constantly ask ourselves what our top priorities are and if we're supporting the overall goals of the company.

  • We want to build something incredibly valuable and have real impact on the world. We're excited to get our hands dirty in pursuit of that goal.

Diversity and Inclusion

We have written our philosophy on the subject publicly, which you're welcome to read: https://hummingbird.co/about-us/diversity-manifesto/

We strive to employ a Rooney Rule (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooney_Rule) for all engineering leadership hires.
